New York City Marathon Training: Week 4

Happy Monday! I can’t believe the weekend is already over even though it was a wonderful 3 day weekend! In case you were out and about enjoying the sunshine, here is what you missed.

Bo and I are officially a month into marathon training and so far things are going well.

IMG_2873 (640x478) The heat hasn’t kept me from averaging two outdoor runs per week, one long run and one tempo run. I’ve enjoyed runs with new and old friends alike, eaten four banana and peanut butter sandwiches so far, and have have only lost one toenail.

With 13 weeks left until the marathon, here’s how my mileage has progressed so far:

Week 1: 17 miles

Week 2: 21 miles

Week 3: 24 miles

Week 4: 23 miles

I was able to stick with all of my runs this week except the 2-3 mile shakeout that I was supposed to do yesterday. However, I did sprints as part of my personal training yesterday so it isn’t like I was lazy.

Monday: 4.8 miles split between a morning 5k and then the run home

Tuesday: Personal Training

Wednesday: 6 mile run outside

Thursday: rest day

Friday: 12 mile long run

Saturday: Personal Training

Sunday: 90 minute Vinyasa yoga class

It will definitely be harder to keep up with my schedule this week since I’m traveling to San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia! In hopes of keeping accountable, here is this week’s schedule:

Monday: 5 mile speed workout

Tuesday: Personal Training

Wednesday: 4-5 mile run in San Francisco

Thursday: rest day

Friday: 14 mile long run along Lake Michigan

Saturday: Shake out run

Sunday: Yoga

My goal this week is to get in each run and focus on eating well while traveling with colleagues.

Question: Have you run a marathon or a half marathon? If so, I’d love to feature you in my Wednesday series, Marathons+Moderation. Please email me or leave a comment if you’re interested!

Good luck getting out! It’s definitely a nasty night up and down the East Coast but Dulles at least has some decent food choices and comfy seating.

I’ll be in San Francisco on Wed too (for work)! Going to try to wake up around 5/6am to get in a run and since I’ll be jet lagged it shouldn’t be a problem. If you want some company on your Wed run let me know! Running along the embarcadero is a beautiful way to wake up.

    Safe travels!

I have a gorgeous run for you in SF (I live here!) depending on where you’re staying! I’m marathon training myself.. and I love reading your updates! Although i’ve only just finished Week 1… 17 to go!

I just ran my first half marathon July 4th! I started running again in January in an attempt to get healthier…you could now say I am addicted to running!

I am training for my 5th half-marathon on October 9, and I ran my first marathon last October! I’m also training for my first sprint triathlon in two weeks. I would love to be featured 🙂

Also great job on week 4 of training! It’s awesome that you balance marathon training with so much cross-training. I did NOT do that when I trained for my marathon and I regret it now. I’ll definitely be adding in a lot more cross-training the next time I train for a marathon!

Amber: That’s fabulous Amber! Congratulations on five successful half marathons and your first marathon! Cross training has really been key this time around!

Congrats on all your training so far!

After reading about you running home from work last week I was thinking I may want to try to do that a few times a week. I’m just running for fun and not training for anything right now. I live a little over 3 miles away from home and was thinking that it would be nice to have a little backpack to put my keys, wallet, and phone in, and just leave my clothes in my office. Would the Camelbak you use be able to hold those things? I’ve been looking online but there are so many different styles!

    • healthyh August 10, 2011 / 12:39 pm

@Brittany: Yes, my Camelbak holds my keys, ziplock with cash and phone, and fuel when I run. I LOVE it and couldn’t live without it!

Thanks! I’m definitely going to check them out!
