Happy Friday!

This week was short but intense. I’ve been in a Summer cold haze most of the week but after lots of sleep I am finally starting to feel like myself again. Bo and I are heading to Garth Brooks tonight with friends and then tomorrow I’m heading out to Rockaway for a surf+yoga workshop with Tangerine Yoga. Follow along on Snapchat tomorrow for what is sure to be a hilarious sight as I have never surfed before!

Now, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • In preparation for our beach trip down in Avalon, New Jersey later this month, I finally ordered two new swimsuits from Athleta! I snagged the Grenada bikini top and bottom as well as the Aqualuxe top and bottom during their sale this week. These should be perfect for playing in the waves as well as relaxing with a good book!
  • After years of using only skim milk, I finally have embraced full fat dairy products. After enjoying a full fat or 2% iced latte I feel far more satiated than I do after a skim latte. This week’s Well+Good article explains the science behind this as well as the multiple benefits of enjoying that full fat yogurt, milk and cheese.
  • Four years ago I fell in love with Uplift Fitness for their welcoming and supportive atmosphere as well as their challenging classes. After a few months away I took their POWER class last night and remembered why I love this spot.  My favorite classes are Endurance and Power and my favorite instructors are Kat and Liz B! If you’re in Los Angeles or New York City, definitely check out this studio!
  • I always find myself gravitating towards red or corral nail polish and CND Lobster Roll is the perfect combination. A bright, orange red color it is a vibrant polish that pairs perfectly with any Summer outfit and is available in both CND’s shellac and weekly polish.
  • I saved $50 this week just by walking three blocks to my public library. Over the past few months I’ve found myself reading more than ever and quickly this healthy habit cost me more than $200 in iBooks and Kindle. Instead of spending more money, I went to the library and searched for ten of the books I had marked as “To Read” in GoodReads. Minutes later I exited with four books and a bill of $0! While I will still use my iPad to read while I’m flying or traveling for business, library books are perfect for the beach and reading at home.
  • July and August typically bring unbearable heat and humidity to New York City. This heat can make running even just a few miles miserable. Luckily Runners World rounds up 10 tips for making hot weather running more bearable, regardless your fitness level.
  • I can’t believe that Sarah Brown had a child just a few months ago and still competed in the Olympic trials this week! Even though she didn’t get her fairy tale ending, I can’t wait to follow her journey.
  • This easy-to-use pesto guide was very helpful last weekend when I made pesto from scratch for the first time. We made the classic version but I really want to try the arugula mint and sun-dried tomato.
  • Last but not least, as you guys know Bo and I both love our ClassPass membership. If you’ve been considering trying it out, they are offering $30 off if you sign up between now and July 29th! (If you use this code, I get $30 too!)

Have a great weekend!

Hi Ashley – I love using the public library, make sure to look into the options for renting ebooks from your library even when you do need to use your iPad or eReader when traveling. A lot of libraries now offer downloads onto these sort of devices within their regular memberships, a great way to save on the book purchases and support your local library!

Thanks Kate! I had no clue 🙂

I was going to suggest the same thing. My library uses and app (Overdrive) and allows me to borrow both ebooks (some in kindle versions) and audiobooks. I can’t imagine how much I would spend on books that I would probably not read again.

Thanks Lauren! I can’t wait to figure this out and start using the app!

As a New York resident you can also join the NYPL and Queens libraries. Brooklyn and NYPL both have Overdrive and 3M reader for ebooks, Queens has a different program but also recently discovered they have Zinio app so you can also get a lot of emagazines for free.

Oh wow Megan thanks for the tip! Are the eMagazines things like Shape, People, etc?

My library offers Kindle books through an app called Overdrive. All you have to do is have a library card for your local library. You can search for books by name, author, genre, etc. and I have found that almost all of the books I search for are available. Sometimes there is a waitlist but you can have up to 10 books checked out at a time and have up to 15 books on hold/waitlisted. It is awesome and saves me so much money! There are lots of libraries available. You should check and see if yours is!

      Thanks Abbey!!

As a librarian, I love that other readers have mentioned library ebooks/eaudiobooks, Overdrive and 3M are easy to use apps, and mean you could choose to never walk 3 blocks to your local branch, download books at 3am, or while vacationing.

That’s it … I’m signing up for a class at Uplift. I loved the class I took two years ago in NYC! Have a great weekend 🙂

    • ashleyd July 11, 2016 / 12:42 pm

Yay Heather let’s make a date. I’m out of town next week but let’s go the following!!

I’m still a member of the NYPL because I own property in New York, and that is my main source of books – requesting them online to go straight to my Kindle. I probably only buy one book a year, even though I read about 100!

I love all the comments about going to the library! I love it too. Putting books on hold is so easy and efficient too – if you don’t mind waiting – a great way to get new and popular books. Sarah Brown, what an amazing story!

      Thanks Danielle!

I was going to leave a comment how you can get lots of ebooks through the library but obviously lots of people beat me to it! I will say I can’t stand the Overdrive app so whenever possible (which is most of the time) I take ebooks out through the Kindle option rather than the Overdrive option.

It’s been a few years since I lived in Brooklyn, but the BPL always had a great ebook selection, as opposed to Minneapolis and St. Paul, where I live now, which unfortunately both have terrible ebook selections.

Thank you Maggie for the great tips!
