An Early Morning Run with Fleet Feet Savannah

Good morning from Savannah!

Just like I expected, last night’s flight landed later than I wanted which meant that I didn’t crawl into bed until past midnight. It was hard to go to bed when my parents and I just wanted to sit downstairs and talk. While we talk on the phone multiple times per week it’s just nice to chat in person. So much more personal and intimate- especially since most of the time when we talk I’m walking somewhere which means there are sirens and traffic in the background!

But, a promise is a promise! When my alarm went off at 5am I saw that Victoria had already texted me letting me know that run club at Fleet Feet Savannah was still happening. I looked outside and saw that the rain had stopped but based on my window temperature it was still a bit chilly. Luckily when I packed my suitcase I threw my favorite New Balance running top (similar one)and my Nike crops. They were the perfect gear for this mornings run especially since I knew there was a chance we’d get caught in the rain. I grabbed a water bottle and my dad’s UGA hat before dashing out the door, ready for a great run.

At 5:45 I met Victoria and 8 other runners in front of the Fleet Feet store.  This morning’s run was a 5.5 mile “easy run” which would lead us through the Ardsley Park neighborhoods towards Forsyth Park and then culminate in a loop of the Park before heading back to the store. As this was my first opportunity to meet Victoria I stuck with she and her running coach for the entire run. Victoria does a 4-1 method of run 4 minutes and walk 1 minute which was new to me. For the first few miles I would run ahead and turn back while she was walking which helped me shake my legs out. The run itself was a great, relaxing chance to get to know a new friend, learn more about the Savannah running scene, and welcome the morning. During the run portion we were keeping around a 9:50 pace which is perfect for an easy run.

Though they are all different speeds during their 3 weekly workouts they support and coach each other to new, small victories and they ensure that each person is never alone on the run!

After the run I stopped at Starbucks for a cappuccino.  There is nothing like knowing that a frothy, warm cup of java is waiting for me after a workout! I picked up a skinny vanilla latte for my mom as a fun surprise since I know this is her favorite. By 7:30 I was back home ready for a great day!

My aunts and uncles don’t arrive until later today so I’m not sure what my parents and I are going to do today especially since it’s supposed to pour all day. Regardless, it’s nice to be back at home with them and relaxing for a few days! I’m forcing myself not to check my work email even though I’m still the only person awake right now!

It’s such an amazing cause and she’d love any support and awareness as she gets up and running!

Some Semblance of Normalcy

This week has been a whirlwind. I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting more but right now the most important thing is that I’m here for my family as a daughter. Thank you for your feedback thus far on the new blog design. It’s been a long work in progress but I’m so excited to see how far it’s come!

In order to keep some sort of semblance of normalcy in my day, I’ve been running each morning from 8-9am. While my runs have only been 3-4 miles each day due to timing, it’s been a wonderful way for me to just get out and have time to think and process everything taking place this week. Two of my runs were sans music which allowed me to focus on breathing. It has also been a nice practice run before the summer heat as my body is slowly getting adjusted to the Savannah heat and humidity again. Yesterday’s high was 90 degrees with humidity of near 80%!

 

In addition to working out, my mom and I have tried to ensure that we continue to eat healthy. During mourning, Southerners love to bring food. It’s there way of helping the family out. But thus far we’ve received delicious, rich food from more people than you could imagine. We’re balancing this out with healthy breakfast and lunch each day.

 

I forgot how much fun it is to sit around a kitchen table enjoying a meal with others. We’ve been talking, reflecting, and laughing during every meal together! Every family and person deals with death in a different way but for us, we’ve dealt with it by talking and being open about our feelings. Hey, it’s okay if you break down during a pedicure- you have a great excuse!

In addition, we’re enjoying the time with family members who are in town for the funeral. Last night my aunt arrived from North Caroline and provided us with a wonderful excuse to enjoy rooftop happy hour drinks and then a delicious dinner downtown.

If you ever make it down to Savannah, I highly recommend getting drinks at the Bohemian Hotel’s bar, Rocks on the Rooftop. The prices are reasonable and the views are gorgeous.

 

 

 

Best Friends!

For dinner, we walked down the block to Vic’s on the River. Located along historic Savannah’s River Street, their food is always reliable and the service is even better. Their specialties include the freshest crab cakes I’ve ever enjoyed and a filet mignon that leaves my dad and brother raving. Last night especially, I can’t say enough about the service. We were waiting on my brother to arrive and therefore wanted to make dinner last longer. My personal favorites last night were the fried green tomato appetizers we shared and my crab cake entrée. I didn’t touch the risotto as it was just too rich but the crab cakes were made from lump crab and seasoned perfectly!

 

Our waitress coursed our appetizers and kept our wine glasses full so we never realized that it had been an hour by the time Ryan arrived. Two hours later we left satiated by the Southern food and thankful for the amazing family we have.

As you can tell from the breakfast picture above, my parents and I are in the midst of planning our trip to Maui. Are there any places you’d recommend or things we can’t miss while we’re there in April?

Winter Beach Walk on Tybee Island

Yesterday was a wonderful recovery day in every sense of the word. We slept in until our bodies woke us up, we were in no hurry, and spent the day enjoying a lazy morning, long walk on the beach, a movie, and finally a homemade dinner!

Breakfast

I wanted something healthy and filling to start the day and there is nothing more simple than fruit and oats! My mom and I had to buy these fresh strawberries as soon as we saw them at Publix! They were on sale and delicious! I miss produce like this when I’m in New York!

After helping Bo set up my dad’s new computer and sorting through our scuba gear, I was ready for lunch!

My mom and I used what she had in the fridge to make a Greek salad and enjoyed a new favorite crackers, Wheat Thin Garden Veggie.

After lunch I headed to the beach with my parents for a long walk. The weather was beautiful, around 60 degrees, and the sun was shining! We didn’t expect to have 20 mph winds blowing against us but luckily we all bundled up enough so that we weren’t miserable. This was the furthest my dad had “power walked” and I’m so proud of him! He kept up with us the entire time and even ran a few minutes with me towards the end!

It wouldn’t be an outing with my parents without some hilarious photo shoot fun.

054 057 058 060 After our walk we saw Mission Impossible with Bo. The movie was better than I expected and the best of the Mission Impossible movies that I’ve seen but I still really want to see Girl with A Dragon Tattoo and New Year’s Eve!

Dinner

Last night, we prepared pork tenderloin two ways: simply spiced and brined and bacon wrapped brined.

We brined both the tenderloins in a salt water/vinegar mixture with some Williams and Sonoma Argentinean spice rub for four hours before grilling them. Our sides were orzo, apple sauce, and roasted root vegetables.

Wow, I forgot how much I love grilled meat! Unfortunately, we can’t have a grill in our New York City apartment and therefore are limited to cast iron cooking which isn’t quite as easy as a gas grill.

Question: If you’ve been to New York City, what was your favorite sight, restaurant, or bar? My parents are coming in January for the fifth time and it’s hard to think of new things to see and do.
