Candle Cafe: Delicious Vegetarian Delight

Thursday evening, after my shopping was complete, I headed down 3rd a few blocks to Candle Cafe. Knowing that Bo was out of town on business gave me the perfect excuse to meet my girlfriend Liz for dinner at Candle. I hadn’t enjoyed Candle’s vegetarian goodness in over a year and was therefore very excited! This cozy location is located on 3rd avenue between 74th and 75th. Upon entering, each patron can quickly see what their goal and mantra is:

Candle Cafe is dedicated to bettering the health of the individual and the planet by serving food fresh from farm to table™. Our organic vegan cuisine is rooted in sustainability, eco-friendly practices, local farming, and compassion for animals.

There is a small juice bar near the front that doubles as a wine and beer bar during the evening hours. Luckily this area wasn’t too crowded while Liz and I waited for our table. Unfortunately, they don’t accept reservations for a party of 2 so there is normally a short wait involved. We didn’t mind however as there was room for us to stand out of the cold and we were able to watch all the amazing food pass and catch up. Once we were seated we quickly ordered an appetizer and wine since we were both starving. The seitan chimichurri which included herb marinated seitan skewers was amazing. The texture was perfect and the flavor was right on with a bit of subtle sweetness due to the citrus. Ordering dinner was far more challenging as everything sounded wonderful and neither Liz nor I like to make the dinner decision first. Normally we wait to see what everyone else orders and then chooses something last minute.

Lasagna Love

But, we finally decided on the tuscan lasagna and paradise casserole. The tuscan lasagna was exactly what I was craving and better than any lasagna i’d had in ages. The seitan ragout tasted just like a flavorful meat combination and I quickly forgot this was a vegitarian entree. My only complaint was the chunkiness and texture of the tapioca cheese. It didn’t melt like normal cheese does in lasagna and therefore mostly got pushed to the side.

Liz’s paradise casserole was MASSIVE and a feat to even enjoy half as it was filled with delicious sweet potatoes, black beans, and millet over greens. I especially enjoyed the flavor combination of all three paired together in a bit. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Candle Cafe and would return often. The service was friendly and quick while the food delighted each and everyone of our cravings. The wine option was an added bonus as I had forgotten this option and assumed they only had a juice bar. In addition, the prices are very reasonable for a weeknight meal. I can guarantee that if Bo and I end up moving to the UES this April that i’ll be ordering takeout frequently from Candle Cafe. I highly recommend this for a casual meal on a weeknight or weekend! If your plan is to enjoy it with a larger group, call ahead for reservations!

Run For Haiti

I’ve been fighting a headache and dull stomachache all day and am therefore hitting the sack early tonight. But, i’m excited because tomorrow morning I get to complete 9 miles with the one and only Dori! She and I are close to the same pace right now and enjoyed running the NYRR Gridiron 4 miler together two weeks ago. We decided that since we’re both training for the NYC Half Marathon (March 21st) enjoying our long runs together would make them more fun! I’m heading into the city around 7:15 tomorrow morning and then meeting she and Melissa for 5 miles before we head into Central Park for the NYRR Run for Haiti! This 4 miler is open to runners and walkers which means it will be a bit hectic and crazy. But, it’s for a great cause as 100% of the proceeds go to the Haiti Relief Fund. I’m hoping the event sells out as the entry fee was $40 per person and that would be over $400,000 raised!

The race is following the same course as the Gridiron so hopefully two weeks of yoga, speed work, and workouts will mean a faster time! Here’s to hoping I wake up feeling 100%!

P.S: I finally finished The Help tonight and it was amazing!!
P.S.S: Anyone have an extra iPod they want to sell? I bought one off of eBay 6 months ago but i’ve decided I got ripped off as it doesn’t always synch. I haven’t been able to add new songs since the 1st time! 🙁

Up and Moving and some morning EYE CANDY!

Good morning and Happy Thursday! Only one more day until the weekend! I am already excited for this weekend as I have a long run planned with Dori and Melissa which will also include the NYRR Run for Haiti 4 miler, a housewarming party for my cousin Meredith, and hopefully more Olympics watching! Did you see the half pipe competition last night? Amazing! Bo is especially fond of him due to his flaming red hair!
This morning I had speed work planned and some ab work Fitnessista style. My legs are still sore from Sunday and Monday’s long runs and 3 days of Core Fusion DVD. Therefore, this morning’s speed work was not my best. I did the following:
5 mins warmup 6.0
5 mins 6.2
2 mins 7.2
5 mins 6.2
2 mins 7.2
5 mins 6.2
2 mins 7.4
5 mins 6.2
1 min 7.8
Due to a late dinner last night I didn’t half my normal piece of toast and jam before the gym. I wonder if my body was missing that extra burst of food and nutrients?

Before moving over to breakfast, I wanted to make sure everyone knows about the awesome website Groupon. This site sends out a daily deal for over 50 different cities which is normally a 50%-75% discount. The discounts range which is what I love. My friend Elizabeth has benefitted from the Bikram discount last week, my girlfriend snagged Pole Dancing lessons/workout, and I’m thinking about taking advantage of today’s discount for Pilates on Fifth! Here is the link to todays!

This mornings breakfast was exactly what I was craving- Green Tea (Thanks Tea and Honey Store), 1/2 my Jolly green juice from One Lucky Duck, and pumpkin oats.

I hope that Power Vinyasa tonight with Lauren at Equinox will work some of this soreness out of my body. Also, either today or tomorrow I need to buy a new gym bag. Do you all have recommendations? Right now a Lululemon bag is my first choice but i’m open to ideas. My old school Vera Bradley bag from college is just not cutting it anymore. It’s a little akward when I walk into meetings with it up here in NYC.
And now, I leave you with some morning eye candy! I had the great opportunity to meet and hang out with Ryan Reynolds last week at a work event. He is funnier in person than you could ever imagine. This is definitely the worst picture of me (why was I on the end?!) in a while but regardless it was still a fun time!
