A fun, Impromptu weekend

Hello! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. The theme for this weekend was impromptu as we went into the weekend with very few plans but ended up having a great, but busy weekend.

Friday night we kicked off the weekend by spending time with our next door neighbors who just welcomed an adorable baby boy into their family. Guy was in a milk coma when we were there and happily slept in my arms for nearly an hour! After our visit we ordered pizza and salad from Table 87 and spent the rest of the night catching up on Grey’s Anatomy.

Saturday morning we slept until 8:30 since neither of us thought to set an alarm. I quickly made smoothie bowl since I woke up craving something cold. This bowl had blueberries, Calfia Vanilla Almond Milk, Vital Proteins collagen powder, spinach, 1/2 banana, a dash of cinnamon and then topped with my favorite Purely Elizabeth granola!

Agter eating, I rushed over to Aline Pilates for my favorite class that they offer, Prenatal Pilates. The lovely owner, Carey, teaches the class and even though it is a prenatal class, I leave each week sweating and shaking from the tiny pulses.

I spent the rest of the afternoon making Southern Tomato Sandwiches, one of my favorite Southern appetizers or party staples. I volunteered to bring a Southern dish to Frank & Melissa’s Derby Party but waited until Saturday to finalize which dish I’d make.  Though they look simple, the mix of fresh, seasonal tomatoes and herbs paired with seasoning salt and mayoniase makes these a delicious combination! Once I was done cooking, I some how found myself on my hands and knees scrubbing our kitchen floor corners before using both our vacuum and Wetjet to scrub the entire downstaris.

Another thing I didn’t spend much time thinking about was my Derby Party outfit. In years past, I could just grab one of my many Lilly Pulitzer or other vibrant, bright dresses from my closet and pair it with my pink floppy hat. Unfortunately on Saturday when I tried on the five different dresses I’d earmarked in my mind for the derby, they either didn’t fit or were a bit too revealing in the chest area. After a few meltdowns, I decided to wear my Pinkblush dress that is quickly becoming a maternity staple. I hate that i’ve worn it for three different events in less than a month, but at this point, it is one of my most flattering dresses.

As always, Frank and Melissa hosted an amazing party. Just check out the incredible spread they offered their guests including the adorable horse cake pops, deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese, bbq and more! I’m already looking forward to next year’s party when I can enjoy a mint julep instead of sparkling water.

My body has clearly reached third trimester exhuastion as I slept until 9:45 yesterday! After a relaxing breakfast and coffee while reading the New York Times, we ran some errands around the neighborhood including shopping at the Greenmarket and picking up more herbs for our garden from our local hardware store.

Since my body was craving a relaxing yoga class, my friend Elizabeth and I made the last minute decision to sign up for Area Yoga’s Prenatal Yoga class. The 90-minute class was exactly what my lower back and hips needed as it was a mix of some power poses followed by a relaxing and stretching restorative flow. There was a block party going on during the class so our soundtrack included the local DJ’s favorite songs from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. I think my favorite was trying to enjoy savasana while Spice Girls blared below. It was very good practice in finding our center in the midst of chaos.

We closed out the weekend with two episodes of Big Little Lies and an easy but delicious dinner that included flank steak, homemade chimicurri sauce, roasted potatoes and garlic green beans.

CLASSPASS Month In Review: August 2016

NYC Classpass reviews

It’s time for another recap of my ClassPass workout adventures in New York City.  Since I spent time running outside and traveling during August, I didn’t get to use all 10 of my classes. I am thankful that I decided to drop down to the CORE plan for summer and am going to keep using this same plan in September as I know I’ll be running outside a lot for 10k training. As a reminder, the Core Plan is $125 per month and allows ClassPass (Use this link to save $20 on your first month!) members to take 10 classes per cycle and visit any studio up to 3 times.

If you’re on CLASSPASS  feel free to follow my fitness schedule here. I love meeting readers so if you see me in a class, please say hello! If you want to check out my previous monthly recaps, click herehere,  herehere, andhere.  Also, my friends are taking me up on this offer already, but if you guys have ANY questions about ClassPass, even if you’re not in NYC, feel free to email me! I’m happy to help and can also reach out to the team if you have specific questions.

August 2016

  • Number of classes taken: 8
  • Number of studios visited: 6
  • Average cost per workout based on NYC rate of $125 per month for 10 classes: $15.62

Area Yoga Basics

I’m a huge fan of the Area Yoga studio in Carroll Gardens due to the hands on approach to teaching, airy second floor studio and proximity to our house. This class included 60 minutes of  yoga and a total of 10 minutes of meditation and childs pose/savasana at the beginning and end. The basics class ensures that any student, regardless their level, can reap the benefits of yoga and try new things during class. This particular class included everything from some slower flow, focusing on alignment, to an introduction to headstands. I was so relaxed by the end that I fell asleep during an especially relaxing savasana which included props to make it even more restorative and relaxing than normal. Make sure to bring your mat and towels to this no-frills studio as it’s $2 to rent.

IMAX Shift

Unfortunately this new Brooklyn spin studio did not delivery on our expectations. The IMAX screen reminded us more of the Windows screensaver while the huge studio was awkwardly empty with only 5 of 50 bikes filled. While I did get a pretty good workout during the class, I didn’t enjoy it. If you want to read more, check out the full review I wrote last week following the class.

We Flow Hard Y7 (2)

This studio isn’t for everyone, but man do I enjoy it. Luckily, my friends like it too so lately it’s become a “happy hour” workout choice on Friday evenings. Each class is a bit different but in the WeFlowHard classes, students should come prepared to sweat – a lot. The infared heated room is darkened so that students can focus on their flow versus watching others or feeling self conscious. The music is often rap or top 40 music which creates a very different vibe than you have at most yoga studios. Throughout the class there is time for free flow which allows students to complete a sequence at their own rhythm and pace.  The Flatiron location doesn’t have showers but both locations feature a “refresh bar” where students can blow dry hair, freshen up and apply makeup. If you want to read more about Y7 you can read my full studio review here.

Box Group at Work Train Fight (2)

Recently boxing has become Bo’s favorite workout so finding a studio that we both like was a priority during August. Work Train Fight, which I first learned about from Meaghan’s review, is the perfect studio for us. The classes have no more than 15 students, ensuring corrections and adjustments from the instructor. Each of the classes we have taken there so far have been challenging but not so hard that we want to quit. The instructors take time at the beginning of each section to review the moves so everyone, even new students, can quickly follow along.  The gym also offers treadmills and weights which students can use if they arrive early or stay after class. If you want to shower before work, the studio has locker rooms and showers but make sure to bring your own toiletries.

Church Street Boxing

The second boxing studio we tried in August, this is definitely more of a gritty experience which I would recommend to people who have previously taken boxing classes. While the staff was very friendly and welcoming, I felt like a beginner in this class, barely able to keep up with the other students as the class quickly transitioned movements. Even though I’ve taken multiple boxing and HIIT classes, the ten minute warm-up left me sweating and against the wall catching my breath as well as confused since I’d never heard of some of the moves and the teacher didn’t demonstrate them. After the warm up we headed outside for walking lunges around the block, which when done correctly, takes longer than you’d think. The actual boxing work portion of the class was great but the 25 minutes of warm-up and cardio before that really turned me off to the studio. In addition, the showers and lockeroom are quite small and grimy so make sure to bring your own towel, shower shoes and toiletries.

Mixed Level Bar Method Brooklyn

This is hands down my favorite barre studio. It’s super convenient, spotless, welcoming and offers more than eight classes per day. The 60-minute, non-impact total body workout includes a warm-up, arm section using free-weights and body weight followed by intense leg work at the bar and finally an ab section. The teachers are welcoming and do a wonderful job providing adjustments and helping you ensure you get the most out of the workout. This studio has two showers so you can easily get ready for work after class. Make sure to bring socks with you for class and wear leggings or crops. My favorite teachers are Lauren, Alyssa and Katie!

CLASSPASS Month in Review – October & November

Classpass month in review oct nov

As you may remember, three months ago Bo and I decided to give ClassPass a try after hearing wonderful things about it, realizing the two of us could leverage it together and a positive month long trial back in July.

Each month I will provide a brief recap of our experience including the number of classes taken, average cost per class and a brief recap of the studios where we sweat that month. In addition, if you’re on CLASSPASS feel free to follow my fitness schedule here. I love meeting readers so if you see me in a class, please say hello! If you want to check out my recap from Month 1 click here.

Month 2: October 20- November 19th

Number of classes taken: 13

Number of studios visited: 8

Number of classes missed or late cancelled: 0

Average cost per workout based on NYC rate of $125 per month: $9.65

Considering that I spent six days traveling for business or races, I am thrilled with the number of classes I took the first month. Of these classes, nine of them were early morning classes taken with Bo before work. On a typical day I take the subway into Manhattan with him for a 6 AM class somewhere in Flatiron or Chelsea. Once class is over he’ll shower at the studio and head to work while I’ll quickly hop back on the subway towards Brooklyn.

Keep in mind, while Bar Method Brooklyn is a ClassPass studio, I use their registration tool and the membership as part of our partnership versus registering on ClassPass. If you include that, then there would be an additional seven classes and one studio added to the below list, which would of course reduce the average cost even more.

As you can see from the below, last month I didn’t do as much yoga, but still mixed things up with lots of cross training especially after the half marathon on November 7th.

Last Month’s Classes

The Distance at Mile High Run Club (3)

I’ve professed my love of Mile High multiple times (full review here) but only recently did I begin taking their distance classes. The distance class is 60 minutes of running, and is therefore designed specifically for the advanced runner or athlete who is looking for a challenge. The 60 minute class isn’t for the feign of heart as it includes 50 minutes of non-stop running including hills and speed work. During the three classes I covered an average of 5.5 miles per class, which included race simulations, sprints and hill work. I highly recommend class with Luke or Michael who each teach a handful of distance classes per week. If you are new to Mile High or running, the Dash 28 class with Andia Wilson is also a great option!

Lotus Hour at Laughing Lotus

When I lived in Gramercy, I used to frequent Laughing Lotus with Theodora. This class, which I took with five other blogger friends, reminded me why I frequented the studio. It is conveniently located in Chelsea, has classes almost every hour, their classes tend to be challenging but motivating, and the warm studio means that by the end of the 60 minute class you are drenched in sweat. The only downside to this studio is the changing area which is tight, crowded and steamy.

Row House Full Body 45 at Row House Chelsea (2)

Rowing is a wonderful, low-impact workout which can supplement any workout plan. While I’ve taken classes at CityRow, Row House is the first rowing workout in NYC that truly reminded me of the rowing practices Bo and I sweat through in high school. The Full Body 45 class is a 45-minute class which includes a 5 minutes of rowing drills to warm-up, 15 minutes of rowing intervals and sprints, 5-10 minutes of strength work, another 15 minutes of rowing intervals and sprints, followed by a short cooldown. The class is perfect for people of all abilities as each person controls the speed or intensity at which they row. Scott is our favorite instructor, constantly motivating students while correcting form and ensuring that everyone is pushing themselves. For those who need to sweat and then dash to work, the Row House Chelsea location includes a small, but nice locker room featuring two showers, blow dryers and toiletries where you can get ready for work or date night.

Fly 45 at Flywheel (2)

Historically, I’ve had a love hate relationship with Flywheel. I love that the studio provides water, spin shoes, towels and healthy snacks with the cost of every class. But, I have had one too many sub-par teachers who don’t inspire or push me during class. Luckily, last month, Bo discovered two teachers (Josh Arden and Johnny De Triquet) who merged challenging classes with awesome, upbeat playlists. Now that we’ve discovered these teachers, we’ll more than likely use our 3 classes per month allowance since they have 5:30 or  6 AM classes daily.

Flow and Restore at Area Yoga

I’m a huge fan of the Area Yoga studio in Carroll Gardens due to the hands on approach to teaching, airy second floor studio and proximity to our house. This class included 40 minutes of strong, power yoga which left me sweating but then flowed into a relaxing 30 minute sequence of restorative poses. I was so relaxed by the end that I fell asleep during legs up the wall. Make sure to bring your mat and towels to this no-frills studio as it’s $2 to rent.

All Levels 75 Min Flow at Brooklyn Yoga Project

Nestled in a Carroll Gardens brownstone, this studio is small but mighty. Featuring just one studio space and a small entry area, they squeeze in average of seven power yoga classes per day. I joined three of my girlfriends who live in Brooklyn and are ClassPass addicts for this 75 Minute Flow on a Sunday morning and left the class drenched in sweat, exhausted and refreshed. While the class is open to all level students, I would recommend it for intermediate to advanced students as it was a challenging class even though the instructor’s adjustments and support made it inspiring and manageable. The Sunday morning class was packed to the brim, meaning that at points I thought the person in front of me was going to kick me during the moves and transitions. Make sure to bring your own mat and towel as this studio charges for both.

Signature Fhix at Fhitting Room (2)

I think I screamed with glee the day I received the ClassPass email stating that Fhitting Room was now an affiliated studio. Bo and I love the 50-minute high intensity classes which pair two instructors with a class of 20-25 students for a sweat inducing good time. The music is always perfectly on point, motivating and pushing us while the instructors lead the group through functional movements such as lunges, burpees and squats followed by strength training with kettle bells and finally high intensity exercises including rowing machines, ski-ergs and box jumps. The atmosphere is one of the most supportive I’ve felt and it is a great starting place for people who want to learn more about functional training and using items like boxes and kettlebells as the instructors adjust students during class. The dual instructor model means that there is always someone watching you! The studio offers showers, lockers, towels and water.

45 Minute Metrics at Peloton

After a solid first experience, Bo and I decided to give Peloton a second try due to the fact that they have lots of classes on their daily schedule, feature one of the nicest locker rooms for post workout showers and we’d heard a great deal about their bikes. This 6 AM class did not disappoint and we loved the instructor, Hannah M Corbin, who motivated me with her six pack abs and infectious smile. The Peloton classes are all streamed live so Peloton bike owners can follow along at home. This creates a different dynamic as the instructor is at times motivating and coaching the class while other times she’s giving props to the riders at home. Regardless, we both agreed that we’d return to this studio because the bikes were the best we’ve ridden on – smooth, easy to read computers and easily adjusted. The gorgeous studio greets clients with complimentary spin shoes, water and towels which make things easy in addition to a spacious locker room which features all the essentials!
