First Trimester Favorites

Pregnancy favorites

You know what? Even a planned pregnancy can be overwhelming sometimes. During the first trimester, I quickly learned that I knew very little about pregnancy beyond the typical stereotypes. Luckily, as soon as I opened up on Facebook and this blog, asking for help, readers and friends alike started sharing suggestions and wise words of wisdom.

Since these suggestions proved so helpful, I want to ensure I share them with you all, beginning with tonight’s post – First Trimester Favorites. The first section is items that I swore by during my first trimester while the second section is items that multiple friends and readers have recommended and loved.

  • Sparkling Water –  One of my biggest pregnancy symptoms, especially during the first trimester, is an insatiable thirst. Since finding out I was pregnant I have enjoyed at least two La Croix sparkling waters each day in addition to lots of water flavored with freshly sliced lemons or cucumber. My favorite sparkling water is La Croix, especially lime and peach-pear.  In New York City, I find that ordering them on Foodkick or Jet is the cheapest option as they typically have at least one flavor on sale each week.
  • Graham Crackers – The only solution I found to the morning nausea and headaches I felt upon waking up was to have half a graham cracker and cup of water before getting out of bed. Throughout my first trimester I carried graham crackers with me everywhere, often nibbling on a few throughout the day anytime I started to feel nauseous.
  • Ginger Chews – I also found that during the day, having a ginger chew or two helped keep the dry heaving and nausea at bay, especially during taxi cab and subway rides.
  • Prenatal Vitamins – Per the recommendation of my doctor, I started taking prenatal vitamins on a daily basis back when Bo and I actively started the conception process. However, it wasn’t until I found out that I was pregnant that I researched prenatal vitamins and realized my yummy gummy vitamin received a D ranking. Since then, I’ve switched to Rainbow Light Prenatal One .  I like that I only have to take one vitamin to get all the vitamins and minerals my baby and I need during this important time period. Unlike other vitamins, this is also very gentle on my stomach.
  • Pregnancy Plus App – After trying a few different apps I found that I appreciated the wealth of information pushed to me on a daily basis through the articles as well as the 2D, 3D and basic images, videos and interactive timeline. There is even a section where I can upload belly pictures, appointment recaps, weight, and review their pregnancy guide.
  • Soothing Eye Mask – Even though I typically have energy levels on par with the Energizer Bunny, during the first trimester I felt more like a college student with mono. All I wanted to do was sleep, even during the middle of the day. This mask helped me squeeze in weekend naps, go to sleep faster at night and provide a few moments of soothing comfort when my exhaustion or headaches forced me to lay down.
  • Books – My girlfriend gave me a handful of pregnancy books when I shared our good news and so far I have enjoyed and found myself referencing What to Expect When You’re Expecting and Expecting Better more than any others.
  • Cozy pajamas –  As soon as I started feeling bloated and pregnant, I didn’t want anything constricting around my mid-section. Pair that with the cooler temperatures and I found myself living in cozy pajamas. I ordered this striped pair and plaid pair in a size larger than normal so that I could enjoy them throughout pregnancy and after giving birth. I knew that come next year I’d appreciate the button down top which will allow for breastfeeding.

Reader and Friend Recommendations

I hope any of you who are trying or newly expecting find this helpful. I’ll be sharing my second trimester favorites as well as a recap on best maternity clothing, based on recommendations, over the next few weeks.

Baby Diamond – Week 15

Good evening! I hope you all are having a great week. I’ve been focused on work this week as I made the transition out of relaxed, vacation mode. Starting with this update, I am going to share weekly baby updates capturing my experience. In addition to the weekly updates I will also do a few posts throughout my pregnancy sharing favorite items, reader recommendations and reflections on running and working out through pregnancy.

Week 15 pregnancy

Baby Size: Peach

Weight Gained: We don’t currently have a scale at home but I have probably gained around 12 pounds. At my last doctor’s appointment, my doctor cautioned me to watch my weight gain carefully. To be honest, I was surprised and caught off guard because unlike many women, I have craved lots of healthy foods during pregnancy and felt as if I was taking good care of myself. While I understand her concern, I have also read and heard from others that early weight gain is common in active women due to the reduction in exercise during the first trimester. In fact, now that I am working out again and feeling good, I feel as if I lost a few pounds over the holidays.

Workouts: I was craving workouts this entire week. In fact, I went for two long walks with my mom while we were home and then once we returned to New York I enjoyed Soul Cycle, prenatal pilates, Bar Method, yoga and two runs.

15-week-running

Cravings: I continue to crave La Croix sparkling water, fruit and Italian food. I requested pizza one night when we were home in Savannah and then once we returned to Brooklyn we made homemade spinach and mushroom lasagna.

Food Aversions: Brussels Sprouts or any other vegetable with a strong smell when cooked, like broccoli, don’t appeal to me.

Symptoms: Unlike many women, my hair did not become thick and beautiful during pregnancy. In fact, it became weaker than normal. After getting split ends and fighting with my dull, lackluster hair I had two inches cut off and switched my shampoo and conditioner to a gentler formula. If we’re being honest, my other symptoms are gas and constipation. The only thing that works for my constipation is eating a few prunes followed by hot lemon water. Luckily, the gas is worst in the evening so I’m not embarrassing myself in public though I do feel badly for Bo.

Sleep: During our vacation, Bo and I both went to bed by 10pm each night which allowed me to enjoy at least nine hours of sleep each day. I slept pretty well, though I woke up every single night around 4 AM to use the bathroom and I was up with bad dreams two nights.

Wearing: So far my daily wardrobe is a JCrew tissue turtleneck, AG maternity jeans and a wrap sweater or vest. I bought five turtlenecks on Black Friday in a size larger than normal as I knew they would be a perfect Winter pregnancy staple. Even though I’ve never worn AG before, my friend Elizabeth gave me a pair of hand-me-down AG corduroys and the fit was so perfect that I ordered jeans in the same style during A Pea In the Pod’s holiday sale.

Other random things from the week: Baby brain seems to be in full effect as I did a few very absent minded things last week such as searching the pantry for an item while holding it in my hand, purchasing three packs of corn starch at the grocery store and forgetting where I put something.

Your turn: Any questions? Anything that you loved during your second trimester or any tips?

Weekly Workout Recap – December 12th – 18th

pre-work-miles

Happy Tuesday!  I’m working my way through my work to do list today as I only have a few more hours before I put up my out of office message for two weeks! I am so ready for two weeks of rest and relaxation. We are spending half the time down in Savannah before heading back up to New York City to enjoy a staycation.

In terms of workouts, last week I initially filled my schedule with way too many workouts due to my new-found energy. I was excited to feel human again and was craving workouts. But, luckily my work schedule included three nights of dinners and client meetings which naturally caused me to change my workout schedule. A blessing in disguise, this helped ensure that I didn’t overdo it last week. My goal is to balance my workouts as I know that I can easily get too excited and pack my schedule with multiple workouts especially after missing those sweaty endorphins during the first trimester.

  • Monday December 12th – I started the week with the 6:15 morning
class at my neighborhood Pilates studio, A-Line Pilates. These tower classes are helping me engage my core and begin training the muscles that will be key during labor and delivery. Since the studio is only a five minute walk from my house, I have no excuses!
  • Tuesday December 13th –  My friend Elizabeth, who is three weeks ahead of me in pregnancy, suggested a pre-work jog. Even though it was frigid outside, we had a blast catching up while we walked and jogged around the neighborhood.
  • Wednesday December 14th – Rest Day
  • Thursday December 15th  – Rest Day
  • Friday December 16th –  I ended the work week with another great 6:15 morning Tower Pilates class at A-Line Pilates.
  • Saturday December 17th – As part of a blogger partnership, I had the opportunity to visit the Brooklyn Heights Orange Theory location with Bo. We took the 11:30-12:30 signature Orange 60 class, led by instructor Corey Harbison. I will share more thoughts in an upcoming post but needless to say Bo and I both thoroughly enjoyed class. It left me sore for two days as I haven’t done much strength training over the past few weeks nor hill intervals but thanks to the heart rate monitor and great instructor, I felt safe the entire time.
  • Sunday December 18th –  Before church, Bo and I spent an hour working out at the YMCA. While he swam I did a 45 minute spin class followed by 15 minutes of foam rolling and core work.
