Tuesday Tips: Keeping A Small Apartment Clean

Last month, I was invited to an event hosted by the makers of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda featuring the entertaining expert, Katie Lee. Unfortunately, due to work conflicts, I couldn’t attend the event. But, the sweet and knowedgeable team at Arm & Hammer promised that they’d have Katie answer any questions I may have via email. I quickly jumped at this opportunity as if there’s one thing I’ve learned thus far in New York City is that it’s very hard to keep a 700 square foot apartment clean.

Sounds weird right? A smaller space should be easier to keep clean. Nope! It’s far easier to clutter the space with less things. I sent Katie a list of questions hoping that she’d not only answer them but also become my fairy home princess. Well, I’ll let you guess which one didn’t happen. This week’s Tuesday tips are some easy and inexpensive tips and tricks you can use to keep your space, whether 500 or 2,500 square feet, fresh and clean.

Know when to throw things away. If you’re not careful, your apartment ends up like a purse with odds and ends everywhere. Set aside a time each week, whether 10 minutes daily or during your favorite show to tidy up. The neater your apartment, the bigger it seems. Trust me on this one, decluttering your apartment will make all the difference in the world! Our interior designer forced Bo and I to pick and choose a few important vases and frames we wanted to feature versus the 15-20 frames we had on our hutch and multiple vases.

-Consider hidden storage – under the bed, putting magazines in a basket, purchasing a coffee table or ottoman with storage sections.

-When entertaining, move furniture into another room to make it appear more spacious.

-Keep the space smelling fresh with a great, inexpensive solution like Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Sprinkle some on the couch and carpets, let sit for 15 minutes and then vacuum.

She also shared some of her favorite ways to use good ol’ fashioned Arm & Hammer baking soda which most people have sitting in their pantry or fridge.  Who knew that baking soda can be used to clean stainless steel sinks without scratching? How about cleaning your carpets after a dirty or wet pet has had too much fun on them? What about mixing it in your cleanser to create a facial exfoliant?

This evening, before my friend Camille came over I tried this trick and was amazed! Just a few sprinkles of baking soda across my carpet, five minutes of absorption time and they looked like new after vacuuming. I swear the baking soda absorbed dirt along with any smells because they seemed cleaner than they have in ages!

*I was not compensated for this post but Arm & Hammer did provided me with a free box of baking soda.

Mucho Monday

Hey gang! I gave today’s post the title Mucho Monday because I have lots to share so let’s get cracking!

First of all, many of you have asked that I start sharing my weekly workouts again. Since I’m working with a training coach, I can’t share my full training schedule on the blog but for now I’ll do my best to share my weekly plans with you on Mondays. Does that sound like a plan? As soon as I saw this week’s plan I realized that the taper is officially beginning for next Saturday’s half marathon! I can’t believe it’s already here. I’m definitely a bit nervous since I’m focusing on a PR this year.

Monday: 3.25 Mile Run

Tuesday: Personal Training Session + 3 miles GP

Wednesday: 10 min warm up, 5x(1/2mi @10k pace, 1 min cool down between) 10 min cool down

Thursday: Personal  Training Session + yoga (maybe)

Friday: Soul Cycle at 6pm

Saturday: 7 Miles (run this SLOOOW – 20 second slower than your goal pace)

Sunday: 2.5 Miles Rec or Yoga

This morning I ended up running outside since I overslept. The run was frigid but luckily my hands were warm thanks to my swanky PDA Running gloves from New Balance. These are definitely an investment well worth the price tag as they worked perfectly the entire run. They kept my hands warmer than I expected and the thumb and pointer fingers feature Touch Tip technology which allows them to work well on iPhones or other screens AND a very useful fleece on the thumb for wiping your nose, or screen for that matter.

This morning’s run wasn’t necessarily fast but it was exactly what I needed this morning: energizing. I put on my new favorite playlist which consists of more Rihanna songs than I remembered existed and dashed through the streets of New York enjoying the crisp, cold morning air and thinking about the week. Here’s the playlist that kept me going for 34 minutes and some foam rolling action.

Leaving work tonight, I had two options: walk a few blocks to the grocery store to stock up on basics for the week or go straight home and order dinner. I made the smart choice and spent 30 minutes walking the aisles of the grocery store discovering a few awesome deals (Chobani 6 for $5) while catching up with one of my college friends on the phone. I stocked up on lots of fresh fruit, which I’ve been craving since I gave up sweets for Lent. I think I’ve eaten an average of a pound of fruit each day! I’m especially loving bananas, pineapples, berries, and green grapes. While there, I also discovered that they have a huge selection of Alexia Foods products. Thanks to the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program, I was able to use a free coupon tonight to try one of their products.  Their spicy sweet potato fries took this basic dinner to a whole new level!

I loved that a serving size was 30 spicy fries, more than enough to give this meal a spicy kick! I paired the fries with a salad and a veggie burger on an english muffin. It was filling and delicious while the fries made it feel indulgent! If you haven’t tried Alexia All Natural products out I highly recommend checking out their Facebook page for more great products!

Last but not least, thank you so much for participating in the Target giveaway! I was overwhelmed by the entries and wish I could choose more than one winner. But, alas, the sole lucky winner is Jenn thanks to random integer. Please email me your contact information so the team at Target can send you your prize!

Hope you all have a fabulous week!

New Balance Treasure Chest and Discount Code

Happy Monday! What a weekend it was. I feel like I need one extra day in this weekend but unfortunately, as we all know, that isn’t possible. So instead, I’m up early busting out 5 miles before a busy day of work. I hope you had a great weekend!

Remember  when Theodora and I met up for a long run before work on Friday? Well we both showed up dressed in adorable New Balanace gear thanks to the gang who is sponsoring our team, Team Off Balance, for the Massachusetts Reach the Beach. Sure, it was embarrassing to run side by side in matching gear, but we were both in love with the jacket, thanks to New Balance.

This team really has been incredible thus far. We may not be the fastest but we’ll definitely be well dressed and in great spirits!

On Wednesday night, Bo told me that I had a huge package. Unfortunately, due to my bout of stomach flu, I had no interest in digging into the package. Instead I left it for Thursday, hoping it would provide a midweek pick me up. I saw that Tina and a few other team members had received packages but I still wasn’t sure what to expect. For the majority of my running career, I ran in Target gear. My first step beyond Target was Lululemon and I was immediately in love with their vibrant colors and wonderful gear. But, beyond that, I haven’t really tried many different types of running gear. Little did I know that the box was really a treasure chest of running gear!

After opening this box, filled to the brim with New Balance goodies stuffed in a perfectly sized New Balance duffel, I have my work cut out for me. Not only have these goodies made me feel like the luckiest little runner in the world, but they’ve also motivated my ass to train seriously for Reach the Beach. I don’t want to let the gang at New Balance down in May and am now more motivated than ever to revaluate my goals with Gia, my running coach, after the National Half on March 17th!

My goal is to review each of these pieces for your benefit, but until then I want to share what I received and what have already leaped to the top as my favorites.

So while I have a lot of work to do in the running and review department, the folks at New Balance want to give you guys the chance to snag some of their great products at a discount. Until March 10th, you guys can use the code NBRTB129TDE47 on shopnewbalance.com for free shipping and a 15% discount!

If you have any questions about the gear, let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them or get you the answer.

Do you have a favorite running or workout brand? What made you love the brand?
