Friday Favorites – January Edition #1

It’s Friday! Insert all the excited emoticons and celebratory gestures!

What do you have planned for the weekend? I’m looking forward to a large pour of red wine tonight and a weekend in the mountains. We’re heading to La Clusaz with our friends for some cross country skiing and relaxing, mountain fun. The trip is easy since La Clusaz is only 90 minutes from Geneva, in southeastern France. As we’ve never cross country skied, Bo and I are taking our downhill skies in case the lesson doesn’t go too well.

When we’re not traveling, I want to make Friday Favorites a regular blog post as I enjoy sharing my favorite things with you along with a few of the things on my wish lists. You can expect that most Friday’s it will be a mix of articles, fashion and beauty items.

So, let’s get things started, shall we?

This article blew my mind yesterday! Hard boiled eggs in a muffin tin? Who knew!

I love that these 12 women dedicate part of their morning to their family and their health. However,  I have to agree with a few other people – they seem to get ready in record time considering they are the “face” of their companies!

Running outside more, and crazy wind in Geneva and St. Petersburg has me replacing my usual lipstick with this lip balm! I love the price, small package that doesn’t open in your purse (lipsticks!!) and the faint tint it provides.

People asked how I stayed warm in St. Petersburg. While the temperatures weren’t that cold, there was ice and snow everywhere. My favorite Sorel boots didn’t come off my feet the entire weekend, save for those workout sessions and sleeping.

The other essential wardrobe item this winter is my new Patagonia Nano Puff jacket. My dad LOVES giving me a jacket each year for Christmas as he knows I’ll think of him when I wear it. When he chooses one as epic as this lightweight, compactable, WARM jacket, I don’t mind at all! Until I owned a Nano I didn’t understand the hype behind what I thought was just another jacket. I love that it is fitted, windproof and lightweight – making it perfect for travel or everyday use!

I’ve been layering this tissue-thin turtleneck under my blazers and favorite fur vest so much that I wish I owned one in every color! I’m was silly and only bought one when we were in the US, but highly recommend you take advantage of the sales and stock up!

My hair goes all sorts of flat in the dry, winter air, but this brush has been taming it better than any I’ve tried previously. The barrel is wide enough that I don’t worry about getting my hair stuck and gives body and gentle waves. For less than $10 it’s a great deal too!

Last but not least, I blame Grace for introducing me to one of my new favorite skincare products. I’ve never been one to use all natural body or face products but after her rave reviews of Tata Harper’s products, I couldn’t help but use my Sephora gift card to try the brand firsthand. My mom and I both used the Tata Harper Purely Powerful trial kit during the holidays, and each raved about how fresh, vibrant and clean our skin felt after using the gentle exfoliating cleanser. The moisturizer is super rich, perfect for nighttime.

Your turn – what do I need to discover next?

Friday Favorites – Winter Running Gear

As many of you realize by now, the winter weather in Geneva is very different than most people assume. Switzerland is known for snow-capped Swiss Alps and skiing, among other things, but Geneva rarely receives snow. Due to Geneva’s proximity to the lake and low elevation, between a few different mountain ranges, the winter climate is far more temperate. Our typical temperatures, December through February range from a low of 28 to a high of 40, far warmer than New York City. In order to ski, most people drive at least an hour, to nearby ski areas which are at higher elevations and have far colder weather.

I haven’t invested in winter running gear over the past few years, even though it now doubles as ski base layers. When I cleaned out my closet and dresser back in November, I realized that much of my gear dated back to my first winter in Philadelphia and was starting to show signs of age. After donating many of the items, I couldn’t resist updating my winter running wardrobe with a few new pieces I found on sale over the holidays.

I’ve had the chance to test out each of these over the past few weeks in Atlanta, Savannah, New York and now Geneva. The verdict is in – each of these pieces was a GREAT investment! They range in price from $12 to $80 so there is something for every price range.

Under Armour Printed UA Fly-By Turtleneck – This is an update on their classic turtleneck which I’ve owned for years. The figure flattering cut makes this the perfect running base layer as you can easily wear more layers without bulk. The neck is extra long, so I was able to pull it over my mouth during a cold run this week. The coolest part is that the chest and neck have a mesh panel which allows for more breathability!

Under Armour Brave The Run Running Gloves – These gloves fit very snug, ensuring that no wind or cold will hit your skin. The finger tips work with smart phones while the front of the glove includes wind blocking material and reflective stripes!

Brooks LSD Lite Vest II (older model on sale here, here and here) – While I own plenty of running jackets, this is my first vest. During my two runs this week I realized just how helpful a vest is, regardless how light it is. This light but mighty vest blocks win while also providing pockets, water resistance, pockets and reflective stripes! This will definitely become a running staple almost year round!

Under Armour Heat Gear Tights – I’ve owned these trusted tights for 7 years and they remain my favorite each season! The moisture wicking material keeps me dry even in the midst of a long run or a sweaty, speed session. The wide waist ensures that it stays in place while also providing a flattering fit. Since they are all black these can also double as leggings when we’re up in the mountains or touring a cold city. At $40 it’s hard to find a better deal for winter running tights!

Lululemon Energy Bra – Okay, this technically isn’t winter running gear, but I added it to the list because it’s a new addition, and I love it! In theory, it is far thicker than some of my other bras so I’ve found that it helps keep that area warmer during cold runs. The thick material and removable pads help give shape to those of us who are less endowed while still providing plenty of support during a run, workout class or at home boot camp!

Original Turtle Fur Fleece Gator – The most inexpensive item on this list, this gator can be worn around the neck/chin area for extra warmth OR worn as a headband! This week I’ve worn it twice as a headband, perfect for keeping my hair out of my face and ears warm.

Brooks Heater Hog Long Sleeve Top – I ordered this after seeing in on a few of my favorite blogs. Many of my long sleeve running tops are technical t-shirts, often too light for winter runs. I was hoping to find an in-between layer that would keep me warm, but not as warm as the Under Armour turtleneck. This fitted top has quickly become my go to top for outdoor workouts! Their description doesn’t lie as it truly wicks moisture from the body! I wore it on a walk in Savannah, thinking we’d be taking a gentle stroll only to realize that we were taking a two-hour power walk. My face was dripping in sweat yet my core and underarms stayed comfortable due to the power of this top!

What’s your favorite piece of winter running gear?

Friday Favorites – Holiday Edition

Good morning and happy Saturday! How was your week? Any big plans for the weekend? We hosted friends for cocktails last night before heading out on a double date. Since our house is fully decorated for Christmas we thought it’d be fun to share the festive atmosphere with friends! Walking through the door each evening it makes my heart happy to see the bright, white Christmas tree lights, our Christmas village and smell the delicious, holiday candles!

I love this time of year!

In fact, I got so caught up in last night’s merriment that I forgot to push publish on this post. Hence the reason that you’re getting a Friday Favorites on Saturday morning, unless you’re on the west coast!

Here’s a round up of things that I’m loving this week! I hope you’ll share something you’re loving in the comments section!

Holiday Cocktails – Bo discovered this great article on Men’s Health yesterday which led to the creation of last night’s cocktail -  The Cinnamon Twist.  We followed the directions except that we substituted a small amount of Habanero peppers since we can’t find Serrano peppers in Geneva. In addition, making the cinnamon simple syrup  is super easy and makes your home smell amazing!

Holiday candles – Some people turn on the Christmas movies and holiday music the day after Thanksgiving but for me, I start lighting the holiday candles. My favorites this year have been cinnamon or pine scent. We’ve had the frasier fir and cinnamon chai Woodwick candles burning the past week. However, our candle collection received an upgrade last night when our friends Olivier and Lauren brought over this lovely seasonal Diptyque candle as a hostess gift.

Cinnamon coffee – Meghann reminded me how delicious a simple dash of cinnamon is when added to either a frothy cappuccino or a simple coffee. Since her visit I’ve added two dashes to my coffee each morning and love the warm flavor it provides without any extra sugar or calories.

Holiday throw pillows – My friend Kate has a wonderful business with her sister, Barefoot Décor. I’ve gifted most of my friends one of her baby items, but this year I love her holiday items more than ever! How festive and cute is this red & cream “Tis the Season” pillow cover

Mrs. Meyers Seasonal collection – We’ve used Mrs. Meyers Clean Day products for years, especially their dish soap and cleaning spray. The products are all natural and made with essential oils while still cleaning just as well as the leading chemical filled brands. Typically the lavender is a staple in our house but this seasons I’m loving their pine scents!

How about you? What are you loving this week?
