Scenic London Long Run

Greetings from rainy London!  IMG_0825 I landed in London City Airport last night around 8:30pm, London time. Thanks to Friday Night Lights season 3 and a cold Heineken, the airport wait and the flight went very smoothly. My office offers a free shuttle service to the airport multiple times an hour which is faster than the TPG bus and a very nice perk. It only took 45 minutes from the minute I left the office until I had cleared security and was sitting in the lounge.  IMG_0824

Unfortunately, I was so excited to see Bo that going to sleep last night was not very easy. I finally fell asleep around midnight only to wake up at 5:15am for my 16 mile long run. By 6am I was out the door and heading towards the Thames River path for 6 solo miles in the cool, damp London morning.

I worked to keep my pace slower than normal during these first few miles as I know how important this is for long runs and marathon training. I also forced myself to sip water constantly as I’m guilty of not drinking enough, especially during cool weather long runs.

By 7am I was standing in Westminster Tube station waiting for my running date. After years of following her on Twitter, I finally had the pleasure of meeting Charlie this morning for a scenic ten mile run around London. Earlier in the week when I asked my London running bloggers if anyone wanted to join for a long run Friday morning, she responded within minutes! Not only did she volunteer to run 10 miles with me but she also took the time to put together an awesome, scenic route that would give me an opportunity to see new areas of the city!

I am so thankful, especially here in Europe, for my blog and the many amazing people it has helped me meet thus far!

Our ten miles took us by some of the well known London sites with one huge benefit – there were no tourists! Running early allowed us to enjoy the paths to ourselves and catch some things we wouldn’t see otherwise such as a stray fox crossing the path, military men training near the park, perfect views of the palace, and streets that were far easier to cross than normal!  IMG_0829 IMG_0830 IMG_0831 photo12 photo13 photo15

IMG_0838Three parks, two palaces, one river, and 10 miles later we ended back where we began, right in front of the Westminster Tube station, within view of Big Ben!

Running with Charlie was so much fun as it was our first time running together so the conversation flowed continuously and made the rainy miles pass far faster! My pace hovered around 9:55 during my first 6 and around 10:10 during the ten miles with Charlie, perfectly on target!

I am so thankful for a new friend in London and look forward to many more runs and activities together! It’s fun having an expert recommend her favorite workout classes, running routes, bars, restaurants, and shopping in the city!

Choose your city! If you could run or walk through any city in the world tomorrow which city would you choose? Why? I would love to do an architecture run through Barcelona! I never made it there during my summer studying abroad in Cadiz, Spain and have longed to visit ever since!

Borough Market

Good morning! I hope you all are having a wonderful week thus far. Unfortuantely I didn’t sleep too well last night as we had a heavy storm that started around 2am and the thunder, wind and lightening was quite loud. But, when my alarm went off at 5:45 I knew Emily would be waiting downstairs in 15 minutes so I didn’t have the option to snooze! Our run was humid and sticky but definitely helped wake me up.

I want to share some pictures and highlights from one of our favorite spots in London thus far, Borough Market. Bo and I love exploring local markets as it gives us a great understanding of the local flavors that influence the restaurants and culture. A large market such as Borough Market or Philadelphia’s famed Reading Terminal Market can be a quick lunch stop as part of a busier agenda or a way to spend a relaxing afternoon. Located near the London Bridge tube station, the market is just a few stops from our temporary housing which has made it a great place to shop on Saturday mornings. Last week we finished our run at the market while this week we rode bikes to the market before spending the afternoon wandering, tasting and sipping our way through the market’s many stalls.

We spent the most time at the seafood and produce stands as we were shopping for Saturday night’s dinner which was sesame encrusted tuna with a warm mushroom salad on the side.   IMG_0399

We planned, as part of our excursion, to enjoy lunch at the market. Instead of choosing one stand for lunch we bought a few small bites from different stands which allowed us to try more new things. It reminded us of a tapas dinner or progressive dinner since we walked around and tasted anything that looked interesting. Often, we used the crowds surrounding a stand as a judge for the food especially when they looked more like locals than tourists. Following the crowds our main food sources were delicious duck sandwiches and The Veggie Table’s Organic Superveg burger. I would love to recreate the burger as it was bursting with quinoa, nuts and vegetables though I fear my at home attempt would fall apart in the pan. I don’t know their secret but the 20 minute wait was well worth it, especially while sipping Prosecco!

If you’re going to be in London, check out Borough Market’s website for specifics on hours, best times to visit, a list of all their vendors, and even some tour options!

Your turn! Are you willing to pay more at a farmer’s market for fresh produce or do you stick to grocery stores for the best price?

Sips and Bites in Marylebone

Greetings from our balcony!

IMG_0449Bo and I have had the most delightful day enjoying the beautiful London weather. It is sunny and about 70 degrees right now, perfect for relaxing on the balcony with a glass of wine, some light appetizers and our iPad which we’ve used all evening to talk with our parents and loved ones.

IMG_0448We are trying to do a good job of ensuring each of our weekends together is balanced. It’s easy to get caught up in the novelty of a new city and living in Europe. But, we’ve promised each other that we will leave time unplanned each weekend for some much needed rest and relaxation. For example, we were busy today from 8-3pm but have been able to relax this evening, ambling around the wharf area, watching the sunset from our balcony, talking to our parents, and cooking dinner in together.

Last night however, we had other plans for our evening which most certainly did not include relaxing at home. Instead, we thought it would be fun to take the tube to Marylebone and spend the evening sipping and tasting our way around our new neighborhood.

We took the Jubilee line from Canary Wharf to Baker Street, which is about a 20 minute ride. This will be Bo’s new commute each day once he moves from temporary housing into the new flat. Bo and I were both spoiled in New York City with very easy, short commutes on reliable lines. Therefore, one of our goals for the new location was that the commute would be pretty easy as we all know that dealing with a long commute after an even longer day is just no fun.

IMG_0356 This is the face of a guy who is very happy with his new commute!

Within 20 minutes we were standing at our new doorstep, ready to embark on an evening of fun! Just a few blocks away we found ourselves ordering a bottle of prosecco at our first location for the evening, Coco Momo. The prosecco was 23 pounds, equivalent to $35.

IMG_0495We spent an hour sipping our bubbly, people watching and dreaming about what our weekends spent in Marylebone will be like. IMG_0357It was a great place to start the celebration. As I mentioned on my Yelp review earlier, we will definitely return for drinks but will not order food in the future. The appetizer dish that we ordered was sub par and over priced.

Once we finished our bottle of prosecco we spent some time meandering through the boutiques on Marylebone High Street that were still open and wandering down a few of the side streets. Our next stop was The Fat of the Land, a Mediterranean tapas bar that caught our attention by the crowd outside and the unique name.  IMG_0364IMG_0497

We were able to snag a seat outside and quickly ordered the grilled octopus and their drink special, a Pimm’s Cup.  IMG_0365 Pimm’s Cup, a classic British cocktail, is typically made by mixing Pimm’s, a gin based liquor, with lemonade or gingerale. Historically, Pimm’s No 1 liquor is a mix of dry gin, liqueor, fruit juices, and spices. Unfortunately, this girl did not care for it and instead swapped with Bo for his pint of beer.    IMG_0498 I’m surprised the Yelp reviews for this spot are so negative as we had a great experience overall. Our grilled octopus was perfectly seasoned and prepared, the service was very prompt even on a Summer Friday evening, the prices were in line with the rest of the area, and our waiter was very friendly. We will definitely be back for a pint of beer and their outdoor seating!

Finally, around 9pm we decided it was time for a proper dinner and ended our evening at Fish Works Seafood Cafe. Bo and I are huge seafood fans so the first time we saw this restaurant during our flat search and heard that their fish monger inside is even better, we knew we’d be trying it soon. IMG_0500

The restaurant focuses on a pairing seasonal, fresh seafood with equally as fresh produce. Everything on the menu sounded wonderful so we spent a few minutes reviewing the menu while we sipped on a glass of pinot grigio. IMG_0499Since we had already had two appetizers, we decided to share a few dishes versus ordering our own meals.  Overall I would say that we were amazed, if not blown away, by the sea bass main course we shared, the sea bass. But, we were underwhelmed by the appetizer (hand picked crab on toast) and pasta course (linguini with clams). They do fish very well and we should have just stuck with seafood all night, in its purest form.

You’ll also notice in the above picture, that there is a green side dish. That my friends is mushy peas. Mushy peas is a traditional English side dish that is most frequently served with fish & chips. It is dried marrowfat peas which are simmered with sugar and salt after being soaked in water overnight. In the past two weeks we’ve both fallen in love with this side dish!

So there you have it, our first evening in Marylebone together, sipping and tasting our way through the small streets.
