Hotel Room Workouts

Good afternoon! I’m in London again this weekend which means another long run with friends, a lunch date with Casey, trying out a new spin studio, and plenty of sleep. It took all week for us to recover from the horrible food poisoning! Thankfully I woke up today feeling 100% and was able to get a lot of work done from our London flat as I had plenty to catch up on after a sick day and three days of travel. Do you all have any fun plans for the weekend?

Speaking of travel, thanks for all your feedback on Wednesday’s debate post about corporate travel policies and hotel gyms. As I said on Twitter yesterday, I am thankful for a world where readers and bloggers can debate and learn from each other and our differences!

One of the things that came out loud and clear in the comments, whether via Twitter, Facebook or the blog were that many people believe in the power of hotel room workouts and the ability to burn calories in your hotel room. Hotel room workouts come in handy especially when hotels either don’t have a gym or the gym has restricted hours. Thursday morning I did my quick 15 minute hotel room workout as the gym didn’t open until 7am.

In order to help you guys out the next time you need a workout you can do in the comfort of your home or hotel room, I created a Hotel Room Workout Pinterest board. It features over 33 different workouts from across the web which you can do with absolutely no equipment. It’s a mix of workouts that you’ve possibly seen from bloggers like Gina, Julie, and Tina along with some that I discovered via Google. One of them, The 99, is so intense it’s more than an hour and is guaranteed to leave you sore the next day! Follow the board for constant inspiration as I’m going to continue adding new workouts from bloggers and fitness magazines as I see them!

10 Tips for Squeezing in Workouts

It’s Friday! I’m so looking forward to a fun London weekend. So far this weekend’s agenda includes another “proper footie”, yoga, a 10 mile long run with some lovely Team Naturally Run ladies, and some fun with Emily who is staying with us this weekend.

Last time Emily stayed with us we saw Crystal Palace vs Chelsea and this weekend we’re heading to the Fulham Football Club to see Fulham vs Southampton. Based on last time, I’m sure there will be some beer and loud cheering involved!

This morning I want to talk about a topic near and dear to my heart – squeezing in workouts. These days, for me working out isn’t about weight loss but instead stress management and happiness. There are few things in life that make me feel more energized and balanced then a good workout, regardless the length. Finding time to workout isn’t always easy. For some people, it is family and work that get in the way. For others it is a demanding travel schedule. When I read about ladies like Katy Widrick, my current “recreational runner” hero, throwing down 1:50 half marathons I know that anything is possible with hard work and positive energy.  (source)

When I see all that she continues to accomplish even with the demands of a young daughter, husband and career I am inspired. This inspiration fueled my workouts this week. It also caused me to reassess any workout barriers and do everything possible to make quality workouts possible.

Yesterday, as I enjoyed a quick 40 minute trail run with Renaud, I thought about the fact that I was literally squeezing this run in between back to back meetings and a flight to London. It wasn’t easy to make it work in my schedule but it was well worth it when we finished – endorphin happy and sweaty from a challenging run. It isn’t always easy to fit in a workout and many days it would be easier to just forget about it. But hopefully these 10 tips will help you squeeze in a workout and make finding excuses to quit before you start 10 times harder!

Squeezing in workouts Your turn – How do you find time to squeeze in a workout? Or, if you have issues with it, what is your biggest barrier?

Silverstone Half Marathon Training: Week 1

Happy Sunday! I hope you all have had a lovely weekend. Bo and I spent the weekend in London getting ourselves back on track. We slept 8 hours each night, worked out each day, cooked in each night together, and enjoyed lots of relaxation time catching up on The Good Wife and watching movies. 002032When we weren’t cooking this weekend we were spending our time working out. The month of December didn’t do much for my training and overall health. I spent two of the weeks battling and succumbing to illness and the other two were spent either stressing myself out over work or celebrating and making merry. In fact, when I look at Daily Mile or even my calendar, I can only find 9 workouts – for the entire month.

Luckily, I have the Adidas Silverstone half marathon in 57 days and this fact is enough to motivate me to ensure I have at least 28 solid days of training this month. This week kicked off my half marathon training and it was a fabulous first week even with New Years Eve festivities in the midst of everything. I am going to work with Gia for this training plan but I won’t have my training plan until this week. Therefore I spent last week trying to build my overall fitness level. I mixed running, weights, yoga and movement together to remind my body and mind how wonderful it feels to workout even when it isn’t convenient.  Here’s the week in review:

Adidas Half Marathon Training Week 1

Monday: 60 minute Elliptical session and 60 minute long walk on the beach with my mom

Tuesday: Travel day but did reach 16,000 steps according to my Polar Loop thanks to lots of airport walking

Wednesday: rest day

Thursday: Uplifting-Sculpt Fusion with Laura and Melissa at Uplift Studios (review to come this week)

Friday: 75 minutes Yang and Yin Yoga at Good Vibes Fitzrovia

Saturday: Lululemon London 60 minute Forrest Yoga class with London blogger friends

Sunday: 4 mile run through Regents Park in London with Bo

My plan for this week is at least three runs and at least one yoga session in addition to the two days of skiing I know are coming up in Verbier this weekend!

Your turn: What’s your plan for January? Do you have something you’re training for or just ready to get back on track?
