Uplifting Strength with Michelle Mason

Friday morning I returned to one of my favorite places in the city to break a sweat, Uplift Studios. As you may recall, I’m no stranger to Uplift. (Previous reviews here and here.)I’ve taken a few classes here in the past, but this was my first time trying their new class format.

In case you haven’t been to Uplift yet, here is a quick tour of the studio including their vibrant green color scheme, shiny gorgeous “locker room” which includes everything and anything you could need, and the group fitness studio. They even offer phone chargers, curling irons, Nespresso machine, and free wi-fi!

Friday morning Theodora and I spent 55 minutes getting our butts kicked during Uplifting Strength, led by Michelle. As I referenced above, Uplift debuted a new workout class schedule back in February which now means they focus the schedule around two classes: Uplift Strength and Uplift Cardio. Their site does a great job describing the new class.

UPLIFTING – STRENGTH:
Uplifting-Strength incorporates dumbbells, resistance bands and your own body in order to build strength and power — two of a woman’s most important assets! You’ll use the heaviest weights you can and work each muscle group to fatigue before moving on to the next. To build explosive power (and to keep calorie burn high!), Tabata-style cardio bursts are incorporated, including a high-energy “finisher” to leave you feeling exhilarated, accomplished, and strong. Developed by Uplift’s general manager and head instructor Michelle Mason.

The 55 minute class few by thanks to Michelle’s awesome playlist which included a mix of top songs, West Coast rap, and old school favorites including Madonna! I love that the class focuses on burning out each muscle group individually and then sticks an intense cardio burst before you transition to the next muscle group. The cardio is not a joke though. It’s 4 minutes of heart pounding hell filled with mountain climbers, burpees, and frog jumps which always kill me!

In addition since you work one muscle group to exhaustion and then move on to the next part, you can push yourself to the limit. I used 15 pound weights for the majority of our strength moves and can definitely feel it two days later! The work we did with the bands were also killers as they targeted muscles in different ways. As always, due to the small class format Michelle was able to correct our moves throughout the class ensuring that we are feeling the moves in the right muscles and not injuring ourselves.

The addition of a timer also helped us push even harder as we knew that there were only 20 seconds or so left of each set. I fully believe in her mantra used in class that you can do anything for a short amount of time. Even if that means dreaded burpees or lunge jumps!

As One Fitness Review

Thanks to my partnership with Fitmapped, I had the opportunity to try a new to me studio last night, As One. Located in Columbus Circle, right down the block from the Time Warner Center, As One squeezes a tough workout into a short time by using functional, compound weighted movements with cardio bursts.

I honestly had no idea what to expect and tweeted yesterday that I was nervous – hoping someone would calm my fears. Just two days after the half marathon my legs were still a bit weary. What I discovered upon entering the studio, located 3 floors above Broadway, was an environment that was somewhere between CrossFit and personal training. 2013-03-20 19.19.38

The studio and machines were very no frill, a far cry from some of the other studios I’ve visited in New York. But, what the studio lacked in frills, it made up for in workout style and personality.

The six of us were told that we’d experience many of their more common workout moves in a 65 minute long class that would mix cardio and strength. In addition, the trainers ensured that they’d watch us for form, correcting us along the way because form is more important than repetition. I loved hearing this as Lauren, my previous personal trainer, often preached the importance of proper form.

Our warm up got each of hearts beating quickly while warming up our joints and muscles: 5 rounds of 20 jumping jacks followed by 5 burpees.

Divided into 2 groups of 3 we started to tackle the core of the class, weight and cardio. They explained that we’d go through a circuit of exercises five times, rotating to stations along the way. The stations included the following:

Cardio: Airdyne bike and StepMill

Floor moves: lunges, squats, mountain climbers, pushups, ab roll downs, dead lifts and rows with sand bags

I really liked mixing it up with the StepMill and Airdyne bike. While the bike was definitely a bit retro, using both arms and legs to keep the pace high was an added challenge. By the time we finished the first round I knew I’d be sweating at the end! In addition, having a small group atmosphere allowed us to gain energy from each other and instilled a bit of competition. I was happy that I could still complete all the pushups in regular style though I did slow on the last round to ensure good form.

True to their promise, the instructors did correct form the entire time and didn’t let anyone slack. This is definitely not a class for you if you like to take it easy or chill. Since the classes don’t allow for more than 15 participants, they can easily adjust and push you harder if they think it’s needed. I like having that level of accountability in a class.

One of the things that set As One apart from other fitness classes I’ve taken in the city that make me sweat and push me such as Barry’s or Uplift was the finale. Each class ends with 10 minutes of foam rolling and stretching. We did a few new to me moves with the foam roller, each of which targeted a different part of the leg! My fatigued legs were very thankful and I felt the buildup start to move as soon as the roller moved over the knots in my quads!

Would I go back: I’m spoiled considering that there are so many fitness options within walking distance of our apartment. If Columbus Circle was more convenient to my office or home, I’d definitely sprinkle this in when I’m looking for a good kick in the pants or with a friend. Their classes range from $20-$35 depending on the class and package purchased. If you want to try it out for yourself, they have such pride in what they do that the first class is ALWAYS FREE! Body Ride at Revolve NYC

Back in December, Revolve Fitness opened it’s doors in Union Square. It seems like each week another boutique fitness studio enters the Gramercy or Flatiron area but Revolve stands out a bit from the rest of the competition.

A newcomer to New York City, this studio is only the second studio in the Revolve family. The first one is based on Washington, DC and has plenty of followers due to their intense rides and their well known Barre Ride which combines barre moves with a spin class.

This morning I had the opportunity to meet up with a few other Fitmapped Ambassadors to try Jason Tran’s Body Ride class. The 45 minute is described on their site as in all in one class.

Cardio…Strength…Flexibility…Everything you need in one complete class. This all-encompassing workout allows you to maximize the time you have to work-out in one place. Start out strong. The ride is cardio-intense and gets the heart rate up and keeps it there. Stay moving while you strengthen and tone the upper body on the bike. Polish it all off with a cool down stretch both on and off the bike. You get it all. You get the complete body

I couldn’t wait to give it a try especially since I’ve heard such wonderful things about Revolve from Gia, Meggie, Dori, Ashley and others. The spin studio itself seems larger than most other New York City spin studios with the 50 bikes. Each Schwinn bike has a person computer which allows you to see your RPMs in addition to space for water bottles. I especially liked that they were VERY easy to adjust unlike some other bikes I’ve used at Equinox and Soul Cycle.

The ride itself was led by the very friendly and enthusiastic Jason Tran who can be found leading spin dance parties daily at NYSC and Revolve. He was very interactive with the class and wanted to ensure everyone was set up for a great ride.

I absolutely loved his playlist and have already downloaded a few of his songs from this morning’s class. He spent half the time on the bike and the rest of the time cheering us on and walking through the class motivating each person to push harder. The ride included multiple hills which woke my quads right up. But, unfortunately, I really didn’t care for the class itself. Because the Body Ride includes spin, weights, and stretching it only included 33 minutes of actual spinning. If I’m signing up for a 45 minute spin class I expect to push my legs through 45 minutes of hills. In Revolve’s defense, I didn’t look at the class length before signing up and assumed it’d be 45 minutes of spin with 10 minutes of weights and 5 minutes of stretching to round out the hour class.

But, luckily they offer 2 other classes which will offer more time on the bike. I can’t wait to give these a try as I really did like the energy of the studio and it’s definitely convenient.

As an FYI, there is a locker room area as well though it only includes 2 showers for men and 2 showers for women along with a long, narrow co-ed locker area. While there are plenty of lockers since there is only one studio at Revolve, this area was jammed pack this morning and I can only imagine what it’s like during the week when people may be trying to shower before work.

So, would I return to Revolve or was once enough? Yes, I’d definitely return to revolve especially for RIP Ride which is a longer class format ranging in length from 60 to 75 minutes. In addition, Revolve is less expensive at $28 and has an intro month special which is $99 for unlimited rides.
