Friends and FlyBarre

This weekend was the perfect mix of rest, friends, and workouts!

Saturday after the NYRR Pride Race Bo and I had the opportunity to catch up with one of my best friends from college, Gavin. He was in town on business but was luckily able to extend his trip so we could spend some quality time together Saturday. We spent the afternoon showing him SoHo, the Village, Gramercy and a few parks in between before returning to our apartment for a round of cocktails.

The boys had fun with the camera while I relaxed with a glass of red wine. DSC_0028 (640x426)DSC_0033 (640x426) We had to part ways earlier than we would have liked since we had plans uptown. Check out these incredible evening views!

IMG_2799 (640x478) IMG_2800 (640x478) A rooftop party was the perfect way to celebrate our friend Eric’s 30th birthday. His girlfriend Louisa was the hostess with the mostess, impressing everyone!

After spending almost the entire day outside, I slept like a baby Sunday night. In fact, I didn’t leave my bed until past noon!

I was lucky enough to snag a spot in Melissa’s free FlyBarre class Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, getting to the class was an obstacle in itself since the Pride Parade route stood between my house and the FlyWheel studio.

DSC_0003 (640x426) Check out the people watching from the windows! I would be so scared of falling!!

DSC_0004 (640x426) DSC_0006 (640x426) As you can tell, it was quite the event, especially after Friday’s vote to legalize same sex marriage. Luckily I made my way quick enough to sprint through FlyWheel’s doors a few minutes before class started.

DSC_0007 (640x426) I had no idea what to expect of FlyBarre except that it would be some sort of bar class.

DSC_0008 (640x426)

The first thing I noticed was the studio space. Unbeknownst to me, I’ve become quite accustomed to a more “spa like” space like Exhale, Pure Yoga, and Bar Method. The white lights paired with the white wall were a bit intense upon first entering.

I forgot about the surroundings within minutes when our energetic instructor Kolina started explaining the class. Many of the props are the same (band, ball, light weights, and mat) but the class is definitely different than any bar class I’ve taken. The “classic bar” portion is interspersed with an interpretive dance portion and dynamic arms.

DSC_0011 (640x426)My favorite parts of the class were the arm series and the ab portion. Using the light weights in new movements such as cross body was a refreshing and challenging change and my arms definitely felt it the next day. I also attribute this to using five pound weights for the majority of the class.

DSC_0017 (640x426)The ab section was centered around resistance bands and included cross overs which targeted the obliques and “pop ups” which focused on the lower abdominals.

DSC_0014 (640x426)Overall, I really enjoyed this class though I wish Kolina had spent more time adjusting the students. Many of us agreed that she participated in the class more than an average instructor and I fear that some students, who were new to bar type classes, may not have left understanding the proper form.  I would definitely take the class again and can’t thank FlyWheel or Melissa enough for the great opportunity.

An Intense Bike Tour of Manhattan

Yesterday’s adventures were unbelievable and intense! When we woke up, after eight hours of sleep, Bo asked if I’d consider doing a long bike ride instead of a long run since he’s training for his first triathlon! I was apprehensive at first but as soon as I saw the glorious weather and had some motivation from Theodora who was also embarking on a long ride, I said of course!

IMG_2385 (640x478)

After breakfast we headed up town to Pedal Pushers bike shop. The staff at Pedal Pushers were super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful! We went in there ready to rent road bikes for the day including clips and the whole nine yards. Unbeknownst to me, clips are scary shit! After getting the requisite lecture about the dangers of biking in New York City and how much cab drivers hate bikers, I was more than a little fearful. Bo on the other hand was ready for clips and excited for the adventure. For once, I listened to my gut and brain and opted to get a bike with cages instead of clips.

IMG_2386 (640x478)This is the smile of girl who is excited to bike for the day with cages instead of clips! Cages allowed me to easily start and stop cycling on the busy city streets.

IMG_0694Our route wasn’t planned very clearly, instead we just went wherever we felt. We started with a loop in Central Park before exiting in Harlem and heading towards Riverside Park.

IMG_0695 IMG_0696 IMG_0693After an adventurous hike and ride through Riverside Park we headed up towards the George Washington bridge. The views of the river and New Jersey were amazing!

IMG_0692 IMG_0685 (640x478) IMG_0686 (480x640) IMG_0688 (478x640)After reaching the bridge we took a water break and then headed down the Hudson River parkway back towards Manhattan.

IMG_0687 (640x478)

Fleet week and the tourists made riding on the Hudson River Parkway less than desirable but I had one thing on my mind, a cold smoothie!

IMG_2387 (478x640)

Thirty miles later we were exhausted but excited for many more long rides in New York. Now we just have to find a better path next time!

We also learned a few things from yesterday’s ride:

  1. If you want to get serious about riding, experiencing a road bike is very important. But, you need to be confident of your abilities before embarking on a long ride in a congested area. Bo felt more confident and therefore chose to go with cages but I on the other hand, just wanted to become comfortable with a road bike versus dealing with clips too.
  2. Be sure to wear the proper attire! Having padded bike shorts on made the ride far more enjoyable for both us and I was still sore at the end! They don’t cure everything but they definitely help!
  3. Carry plenty of water and fuel because YOU will sweat and you will work your body. I’ve always figured that riding a bike was easier than running but there were points yesterday, when I was keeping a 16 mph pace on an incline and was amazed how tough it was. I loved it and was happy I had my Camelbak for easy water access.
  4. If you’re cycling with someone else, have a plan because it’s tough to stay within speaking distance of each other. We started the ride without a plan and quickly got separated which made for a stressful situation. Even though we had our phones, it is IMPOSSIBLE to ride a road bike and talk at the same time on the streets of Manhattan.

Pure Yoga’s Figure 4 Class

Wednesday evening, I had the opportunity to enjoy Pure Yoga West’s newest class addition, Figure 4. The class is an exclusive new program designed by Kate Albarelli, an alum of both Physique 57 and Exhale. I was excited to try the class based on Dori’s review she posted a few weeks ago and all the wonderful things I’ve heard about the instructor.

IMG_2242 (640x478) Well+Good NYC has offered some amazing class opportunities in their year of existence and therefore I new this would be a wonderful experience. In addition, the Pure Yoga experience is beautiful and a spa event just based on the atmosphere and space. Every corner, even the locker rooms, have a warm glow greeting the clients. Even the rain boots and wet umbrellas couldn’t take away from the peaceful and welcoming atmosphere!

IMG_2225 (640x478)The event was even more fun as I met some of my friendliest readers before the class started. Ellen, who also happened to be my guest post on Wednesday, was taking the class as well and it was great meeting and chatting with she and Melissa before the class started.

IMG_2240 (478x640)Since I was expecting this class to be an exact clone of other bar classes, I was surprised to see in the welcome email that we didn’t need socks. In addition, as soon as we walked in the classroom, we were greeted by different tools than normal.

Each of the 30 mat setups included a mat, pilates ring, square foam cushion, and three weights, two heavier weights of either 3 or 4 pounds, and one lighter weight. IMG_2226 (640x478)IMG_2228 (640x478)

I was excited to see we were going to use new tools and my interest was immediately piqued as I now knew that this class would be unique and different.

As soon as our gorgeous and vivacious red headed host entered the room, the energy rose! Her energy was contagious as was her huge smile. She welcomed us whole-heartedly and reinforced the primary reason we were there; to sweat and work our muscles in a new way. She then explained that unlike most bar classes we’d start at the bar, working our leg muscles, since they are the largest muscle group. Starting the workout with the legs gets the metabolism revved up and ready to go.

 IMG_2229 (640x478)IMG_2230 (640x478)

The leg work included lots of squats, plies, and calf raises each of which left me panting and legs burning. The biggest change was that they started slowly and then were rapid fire towards the end of each set.

IMG_2236 (640x478) My legs were killing me by the end especially due to the race the night before and my morning personal training session.

The next part was arms, back at the mat. This is where I saw the biggest improvement based on my personal training. I used 4 pound weights the entire arm section and never felt too much pain. We did lots of lateral raises, hammer curls, and tricep work combined with squats and lunges which worked both body parts.

The best part was that Kate wouldn’t let any of us slack off by not going low enough or staying in the comfortable position where “we could stay all day.”

The next section was the biggest variation from Exhale or Physique 57. We spent a few painful minutes down on the mat with the pilates ring. HOLY HELL! Clearly my inner thighs are a weak area because this exercise brought tears to my eyes.

IMG_2235 (640x478) IMG_2234 (640x478) After fun with the ring we finished with some tricep dip pushups before heading back to the bar for more seat work followed by a final ab sequence on the mat.

I really can’t describe my love for this class! Her energy and music choices truly made the class, which led me to actually request her class playlist after the workout.

It is a great addition to New York City’s bar classes, incorporating great thigh and leg work with a more challenging arm and ab routine than other classes. In addition, the Pure Yoga space is the nicest yoga and workout space I’ve experienced in New York. The warm walls, helpful and considerate staff, and gorgeous class rooms make for a wonderful, sweaty experience!

Thank you Well+Good and Pure Yoga for a wonderful experience! I will definitely be back soon Kate for more of your torture treatment served with a smile and great music!
