Atlanta Christmas 5k

I apologize for the silence but Bo and I have been having a blast back in Georgia!

We landed in Atlanta on Friday evening and since then have been going non-stop, squeezing in as much time with friends and family as possible!

One of our weekend highlights was running the Atlanta Christmas 5k! The race, which ran through Virginia Highland was the perfect way to kick off our Christmas vacation back in the United States. We were able to enjoy a fast 5k through one of our favorite Atlanta neighborhoods and catch up with college friends who were also running the race. IMG_4451

The race atmosphere was so much fun! There were lots of hilarious holiday running outfits ranging from holiday themed tights to people decked out in tacky Christmas sweaters including one woman who had blinking Christmas tree lights on front and back! The humans weren’t the only ones who got into the spirit though. There were TONS of dogs running the race decked out in bells and sweaters.

A small, fun holiday race, capped at 1500 people,  each participant received a Santa hat when they picked up their bib! Unfortunately my ponytail didn’t allow me to wear the hat but it was such a fun detail!

The course, though flatter than last years, was filled with lots of turns and hills through the Virginia Highland neighborhood.

Bo and I ran together the entire race, doing our best to balance pushing the speed with climbing up each of the hills. It was a very different experience versus our European races as we were in the middle of the pack the entire time, rarely passed by other people. We had a great time chatting and looking at the gorgeous homes and hilarious outfits in between feeling the burn in our legs as we climbed the hills.

At one point, as we passed the two mile marker, I began to question our pace as my body was hitting that point of pain that I rarely feel. I knew the pain was only temporary an as it showed up at the two mile point, I only had another 10 or so minutes to push through before the finish line. As we were running Garmin free we agreed to run as quickly as possible though we’d pull back if Bo’s knee or leg started to give him pain.

As it turns out, our effort was worth it! This was a new 5k PR for me of a 27:04 or 8:44 pace. As I know I have faster in me, especially on a flatter course, I’m already excited for 2015!

Did you run a Jingle Jog or holiday race? What was the best outfit you saw on the course?

An Atlanta Date Night

Guys, I’m so sorry about the radio silence yesterday! We spent the entire day catching up with old friends and unfortunately, the 30 minutes that I was in the room yesterday, our hotel’s internet wasn’t working. 🙁 Expect 2-3 more posts today with the rest of this weekend’s details!

After sleeping, catching up on trashy magazines, and goofing around on the plane, we successfully made it to Atlanta in record time!

Boy did we miss Atlanta, highways, driving, and our dear friends!

Our first stop was the brand new rental car facility at the Hartsfield-Atlanta Airport! It is the largest rental car facility in the world! Hertz had a brand new Honda Civic ready and waiting for us!

Within minutes we were enjoying the fresh air, six lane highways, and the feeling of being in a car!

While the Atlanta skyline may not be New York, it’s still one of my favorite sites, especially when you’re coming from the airport!

We arrived at our hotel just in time to freshen up before our dinner reservations. Our room is funky and modern but has wonderful amenities!

We may have hit up the mini bar before we left for dinner, toasting to the start of a wonderful weekend in Atlanta!

Sweetwater 420 for Bo and a Diet Coke and Vodka for me!

One of the hotel’s amenities is car service to local restaurants in their fleet of Acura SUVs. Within minutes, we were dropped off at Ecco, a restaurant we’ve wanted to try for ages!

Located in Midtown Atlanta, this restaurant is known for it’s delicious tapas and small plates along with wonderful service.

Our waiter quickly took us through some of their famous dishes and then their extensive wine menu. I started with a light and fruity French Pinot while Bo enjoyed one of their signature cocktails.

I had to taste test his cocktail to ensure it wasn’t poisonous. Doesn’t every good wife do that?

The décor was funky yet still comfortable and rustic, exactly what we wanted!

We were starving, so while we finished reviewing the menu and choosing our main courses, we started with some of their most popular “taste and share” small plates.

My plate featured the fried goat cheese which was to die for along with their octopus salad and the stuffed pepito peppers! Everything was delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. Each of these small plates were perfect for two people as there were four or five pieces of each item.

After much debate, we decided to try one of their local salads and a flatbread pizza for dinner. Their flatbread pizzas looked delicious each time one passed our table and they are cooked in a huge wood fire oven!

The salad was composed of fresh local greens, radishes, lemon rind, freshly grated cheese, and a light vinaigrette!

The pizza was crisp and light, topped with arugula, drizzled with lemon, and fresh cheese! It was unlike any pizza I’ve ever tried but was delicious! I thought I would miss the sauce and tomatoes but I didn’t!

Our dinner at Ecco was exactly what we wanted and was the first date night we’ve enjoyed in a while! I highly recommend this restaurant if you’re visiting Atlanta and looking for a reliable, delicious, perfectly executed meal with wonderful service and reasonable prices.

Four Girls, Two Husbands, and a Truck

Yeah, that’s how we do things in Georgia!

All joking aside, yesterday was a great day! We were all reunited yesterday for lunch and then an afternoon of shopping and catching up. Due to inclement weather warnings, we left memories of the pool behind for some retail therapy. The focus was on friendship and catching up versus shopping but we still found some good deals. Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and Victoria Secret’s 5 for $25 sale were pretty much the only deals we found. I found two colorful Nike Tempo shorts for $17.90 each which is $10 less than normal. Do new workout clothes make your workouts easier and more fun?

After shopping it was time to get wedding ready. As background, we all lived in the sorority house together during college so sharing a bathroom is something that is second nature for each of us. The new additions, Meghan and Rochelle’s husbands, got quite a kick out of the site.

Some of my best memories in college are getting ready with these ladies! Do you miss roommates if you had them in college? I miss free fashion advice and hair stylists.

And we’re off! Four girls, two boys, and one F250 extended cab!

I’m not going to lie. I think all four of us were surprised by the F-250’s space. We were tight but comfortable and our dresses arrived unwrinkled! Thanks Jason for driving!!

Brad and Alison were married in her home church, Gainesville First United Methodist Church. The wedding was lovely and the bridesmaids dresses were a gorgeous navy blue which blended with the pink peonies beautifully. Alison is an interior designer and you could see her touches throughout the wedding and reception. You could feel their love for each other throughout the entire ceremony as they smiled ear to ear. Weddings make me so happy as I feel they are the start of a new chapter in life for the couple.

The reception was held at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center which was the perfect venue. Blog Pictures 2010 680It was small enough that everyone could watch the bride and groom throughout the evening but had enough nearby hallways and open space that people could breathe and hear each other talk.

The decorations were simple yet elegant floral centerpieces while the art work provided most of the atmosphere and decoration. People really enjoyed exploring Quinlan and its’ art.

The happy bride and groom!

The grooms cake was definitely something to talk about!

The wedding cake was a light lemon cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting. Her bouquet made a gorgeous cake topper!

Best friend for seven years and counting! I’m so glad that we’ve been able to keep in touch and see each other at least once per year since college. Every time we’re together it is as if no time has passed!

Blog Pictures 2010 693 The rest of the evening was spent dancing, laughing, and of course checking out the food. Similar to my wedding, the food was heavy appetizers with a southern influence.
