Friday Favorites–October 20th, 2017

fall in new york

Happy Friday! I hope you all are ready for a wonderful weekend. This afternoon we have Katie’s four month pediatrician appointment which includes another round of shots. It’s been two months since we’ve been to the doctor so I’m looking forward to getting her updated weight and height!  How the heck is she already four months old! This month she came alive with SO much personality, energy and laughter. Spending each day with her has been such a joy, even during the few days when sleep didn’t go well.  The rest of this weekend should be pretty relaxed as we do not have any plans. Between Halloween, Katie’s Baptism and returning to work the next few weekends are going to be packed so I’m looking forward to soaking up some rest and relaxation before the chaos begins.

Now, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • After ordering 12 (!!?) different pair of booties over the past month, I finally found a pair that I loved so much that I already ordered them in a second color! These Treasure & Bond Winsor booties are under $100, feature a block heel which makes them more comfortable for walking, are the perfect height bootie to go with skinny jeans or stockings when paired with a skirt or dress. I am now the proud owner of the black suede and the sand suede colors! As an FYI, I found that they run pretty true to size!
  • I mentioned last week that I finally ordered my first pair of Zella leggings after hearing rave reviews from friends. The Zella Live In High Waist leggings are my new favorite pair of pants that can easily go from park workout to weekend errands thanks to their moisture wicking and flattering high rise. No wonder they have over 2,900 positive reviews on Nordstrom! I also love that they are $54 which is half the price of the other high-rise leggings I was considering.
  • Earlier this week I asked for your tips as I transition to a working mom in just two weeks. More than 20 people recommended the book The Fifth Trimester which is an honest and helpful guide to the challenges women face as they transition back to work after staying home with their child during the first few months. I’m so appreciative of Lauren Smith Brody’s poignant book that I reached out to her on Instagram which resulted in a two day conversation! Even though I’m only a quarter of the way through the book she has helped me change my anxiety and fear into excitement and also put a few things in place to hopefully make the transition smoother.
  • For years, we always had a WoodWick candle burning in our home but when we lived abroad, it was difficult to find them and after having two break when trying to bring them back in checked luggage, we gave up our love and found local, European candle replacements. During last week’s shopping trip I saw a display of WoodWick candles and quickly bought my two favorite scents – Fireside and Pumpkin Butter. I am a sucker for the crackling sound that comes from the wood wick and love that the fragrant candle is able to spread the warm scent throughout our downstairs.
  • I have met some incredibly talented moms during my maternity leave including Siobahn O’Connor, one of the editorial directors at Time Magazine.  The piece she wrote, When You’re Pregnant, Everyone is Suddenly an Expert on Your Health resonated with me and so many other women. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end when you have the baby as pregnancy is when the judgement and opinions just begin. I am so intrigued by their cover article this week, The Goddess Myth – How a Vision of Perfect Motherhood Hurts Moms, that I bought the print copy yesterday!
  • Always a fan of roasting vegetables, I’m not sure why it took me so long to realize you can also roast green beans! These roasted parmesan green beans have become a regular in our kitchen recently as they are so easy and tasty! I especially love adding a dash of Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel seasoning mix!
  • In case you missed it, this Easy Baked Pasta recipe has already become one of my top posts in just a day! Clearly we all love cheesy goodness that is ready in minutes!
  • I’ve been searching for a few new pair of work pants since these hips are definitely wider than they were before baby. Flattering and forgiving were the two qualities I wanted and these Easy Pants from J.Crew fit the bill perfectly. I snagged them during one of their 30% off promotions a few weeks ago and can tell that these will be perfect for work travel and client meetings alike! I love that they come in petite, regular and tall – perfect regardless your height!
  • Thanks to your recommendations, I bought two of the GapFit Breathe tie-back tanks and am loving them! The adjustable back easily accomodates my hips and any pooch I want to hide while the top and neck line are more form fitting and flattering. Thanks to their 40% off sale you can snag this top for just $15 which is a STEAL considering the quality, fit and sweat-wicking material! Has anyone worn their long-sleeve version of this top as I’m thinking it could be great now that the weather is getting cooler?

Your turn – What are you loving this week?

Under $100 Fall Wish List

Next weekend we are heading back to Vermont for another relaxing weekend. While I’m thrilled to enjoy fresh air and rest in the Green Mountain state, the weather forecast immediately made me realize that I need to go shopping. The forecast is currently showing lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s which means I need to have jeans, sweatshirts and long sleeve shirts packed and ready to wear. In addition, when I go back to work on November 6th, I need to have some business casual clothing that fits, flatters and works for customer meetings or business travel. As I’ve mentioned before, my body shape has changed since giving birth to Katie. I have curves that I’ve never had before, especially in the hip area. Even though the scale shows only a few pounds left until I reach my pre-baby weight, my clothes tell a different story. This morning I spent time going through my closet and trying on a mix of casual and work clothing, to see what works and doesn’t.

After realizing that I need to order at least a few items, I was inspired to use put together a fall fashion wish list including items that I’ve already ordered, other that I hope to order soon and others that are favorites that I take out again and again each year, like my houndstooth puffer vest.

In no particular order, here are 15 items I’m loving, each of which are under $100 after the additional 30% discount each retailer is currently offering.

LOFT

JCrew Factory

JCREW

Friday Favorites–September 8th, 2017

Happy Friday friends! I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been a bundle of nerves during this short week. When Bo and I left Savannah on Tuesday the sun was shining, temps were cool and we’d just had the most incredible visit home. Now my family is on the road, evacuating from Hurricane Irma and hoping for the best. For perspective, last October when Hurricane Matthew hit Savannah it was a Category 1 storm but the tornadoes that accompanied it did thousands of dollars worth of damage to my brother’s property and Savannah. This storm is predicted to be far worse for the Southeast so I’ll just be over here updating the Weather Channel non-stop the next few days.  My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is dealing with the horrible weather right now whether that’s extreme heat, forrest fires, or hurricanes.

At least I was able to distract myself for a few minutes while putting together this week’s Friday Favorites. So, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • I’m in love with this throwback that J.Crew just introduced and ordered it in two colors – navy and pink. The relaxed fit, longer length and classic look I know I’ll wear this frequently throughout the Fall! I may even pair it with jean shorts this weekend!
  • My friends at Vega sent me a box with their newest goodies including the delicious, ready to drink nutrition shake. I enjoyed the vanilla flavor yesterday during a pumping session and was amazed how delicious it was considering the great nutritional stats! There was no chalky taste or weird aftertasted. Bo took the chocolate flavor to work today as an afternoon snack!  They are having a Back to Campus sale so everything on their site is 25% off which means you can get 12 of these shakes for for just $1.87 each which is cheaper than an afternoon latte!
  • If you follow me on Instagram then you’ve seen me rave about Beauty Counter’s Five Minute Face. It’s been 2.5 weeks since the package arrived with the six products to take me from freshly washed face to finished face. I’ve fallen in love with the easy routine that takes the guess work out of applying makeup! In fact, these six products have made my routine so easy that I found myself cleaning out my makeup  bag and getting rid of other products that I don’t need anymore! For less than $150 you can clean up your beauty routine and refresh your makeup with updated hues and tones for Fall. As an FYI, I ordered the Tint Skin in Sand, Concealer in Light, Brow Pencil in Medium, Lengthening Mascara, Tulip/Bloom blush and the bare shimmer lip gloss
  • I never realized how helpful and crazy Facebook mom groups could be at the same time. I spend at least 15 minutes a day in my neighborhood group and I think that all moms could benefit from reading this Facebook mom group etiquette guide following the falling out in the UES Moms group last month.
  • Looking for home workout inspiration? Julie’s 15 30-minute or less home workouts is a great post to pin and keep for future reference!
  • Since I frequently find myself grabbing for a snack while Katie and I are out and about, I love keeping a few healthy snacks in my diaper bag. Recently I’ve enjoyd the single-serve trail mix packs Sunkist Snacks sent. Available in a wide range of flavors, they pack in a lot of flavor with the fruit and nut combinations such as ginger peach, guava chili mango, and mango dark chocolate.
  • When we were in Vermont I picked up this Vineyard Vines quarter zip at the outlet and found myself wearing it everyday. The thumb holes make it great for colder days while the front pocket allowed me to easily stash my phone, cash and car keys during errands or walks.
  • As the cooler temperatures arrive in New York, I find myself looking up Fall recipes including chillis, breads and soups. This healthy turkey piccata recipe seems like a perfect transitional dinner for this in between weather.
  • Did you see the new campaign Strava released last week? I love the way it goes against the traditional ideas of an athlete – egos, curation and judgement – and instead highlights the everyday athlete! There are some familiar faces in the #AthletesUnfiltered campaign!
  • Speaking of Fall, this vest is always a fall favorite and it’s on sale right now!
  • Another Fall favorite, I lived in these pants last year and plan to wear them on repeat on Fall and Winter paired with tall boots or flats.

Your turn: What is your favorite Fall wardrobe item?
