Back in the Routine..

Tonight, while walking down 5th Avenue, I had the joy to see this amazing scene. It’s moments like this that remind me how lucky I am to live in New York City!

Being back in New York City, also means getting back into the routine.

Bo and I were up early for Dave M’s spin class at Equinox at 44th and Lexington. This morning we even stayed for “extra credit.” Oh yes, you read that correctly. Dave offers students extra credit after the official class is over. This extra credit lasts 30 minutes and he allows those students who remain to each choose a challenge during the 30 minute time period. My segment was rolling hills (8 in the saddle and 3 out of the saddle) and I absolutely loved choosing a segment and coaching the 6 remaining students through the workout.

After a longer and sweatier than normal class, I was craving a larger bowl of morning oatmeal.

I added some Fage greek yogurt to the mix for extra staying power. It wasn’t pretty but it certainly was delicious.

Lunch was an unpictured combination provided by my office. This week is our Healthy Living week during which our HR team provides fruits, flavored water, office massages, and stress balls for the office. The also catered a healthy lunch which included 3 different types of salad, fruit, and almonds. I only wish they had included some protein as my salad didn’t have much staying power. Around 3pm I added a can of safety soup. My desk drawer is filled with 6 cans of Progresso Reduced sodium soups for emergency days when I don’t have time to leave the office or get hungry at random moments.

Thanks to a wonderful Equinox promotion, my muscles were treated to a 80 minute deep tissue massage. Seeing the same massage therapist means that Tonya is now very in touch with my body and skeletal alignment. Today she spent the last 25 minutes treating my feet to a reflexology session. This was my first reflexology session and it was even more relaxing than a Swedish massage. The pressure points along the foot affect more than just that area!

  • What is reflexology: Reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to the feet and hands utilizing specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil, cream or lotion based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change in the body.
  • What are its benefits?  It creates relaxation, reduces pain, and improves blood flow.

Luckily, when I walked in the door Bo had dinner ready and waiting!

Homemade Greek salads complete with feta cheese, grilled chicken, romaine, red onions, tomatoes, herbs, hummus, and toasted pita bread!

Question: Do you keep a “safety stock” of food in your desk drawer? What is your emergency item?

What I Learned On The Massage Table…

Tonight I had a date with Tonya, my favorite massage therapist at Equinox.  Speaking of which, never call your massage therapist a masseuse as that has sexual innuendos in the industry. photo (34)

Luckily, most Equinox spas feature a great weekday discount on their massage services: 80 minutes for the price of 50 minutes. I indulged on a hot stone massage today versus my traditional deep tissue. The description sold me immediately and I thought that the stones would make the pain of the deep tissue more relaxing and spa like.photo (35)

About this Spa Service : A breakthrough technique aimed at balancing the body’s emotional, mental, physical and spiritual energies through the application of gently heated stones as part of a deeply relaxing and penetrating massage which unlocks the body’s natural healing energies.

Meet the stars of today’s treatment: a few smooth, hot stones.  photo (33)These innocent black stones meant business. They definitely took my massage to a new level as they allowed Tonya to apply more pressure than she can with her hands alone. The warmth of the stones also warm the muscles quickly which makes them more malleable.

But, more importantly, back to the lessons I learned on this cozy table during my 80 minute session.  If you think about it, a regular massage therapist is very close to you as they touch parts of your body that few others touch or see for that matter. Therefore, her insight and comments throughout our session taught me a great deal about what I need to change over the next few weeks and months to continue training injury free.

  1. A massage therapist will know how hard you are working out since they can clearly feel the difference between muscle and flab. Knowing that someone will feel your body once a month is great incentive to work harder in the gym. Luckily, Tonya noticed my hard work today. Nothing puts me in the mood like a compliment.
  2. A massage is like yoga, in order to truly be present and enjoy the moment, you need to stop making to do lists in your head. Twenty minutes into the massage she saw my fingers moving and asked what I was doing. "Oh, I’m calculating my required splits if I want to PR in next weekend’s half." She quickly reminded me that if I exhaust my brain and body before then, I will not reach my goal. Take time to relax.
  3. Stretching for two minutes doesn’t stretch, lengthen, or relax your muscles after an hour of spin class or other physical abuse. She asked me if I stretched daily after feeling my knots and tightness. As soon as I said yes she explained that a stretching session should last at least ten minutes if I’m stretching multiple body parts. She suggested holding each stretch for 30 seconds and then holding deep stretches like hip flexors for a minute if they are especially tight.
  4. Massage therapy will in time increase my flexibility. Flexibility is requisite for an athlete or casual runner’s success during race season. Since massage therapy stretches the muscle fibers, flexibility is promoted and maintained.
  5. Ice therapy can be a wonderful at home massage technique to balance foam rolling and stretching. Using ice as part of the RICE (rest, ice, compress, and elevate) is a cheap way to keep your muscles in shape in between tough workouts which leave them tired and inflamed. Also known as cryotherapy, ice decreases the amount of swelling, muscle spasms, and pain. Don’t feel like you have to spend money on a fancy ice pack. A Ziplock bag and crushed ice is the perfect late night date when you’re muscles are screaming and you’re watching this week’s episode of the Jersey Shore.

Reinventing the Basics

Today was all about reinventing the basics! This morning I switched up my normal oatmeal routine for a new breakfast sandwich bursting with protein and fiber. Now it was time to do the same at lunch!

My daily salad lunches are always filling, nutritious, and filled with volume but they can sometimes get boring and repetitive. Today, I decided to switch my Pax salad up a bit with some delicious additions and swaps!

Blog Pictures 2010 437Yes, I unfortunately eat lunch at my desk everyday either pounding through work or pushing through a meeting. Also, notice that awesome black and red North Face bottle in the background. This may be my favorite piece of swag we received during the North Face Endurance Challenge this weekend. It’s UGA colors and reminds me of all the fun we had!

This delicious mix included the following:

mixed greens, carrots, red onions, chicken, spinach, celery, 1/2 serving of olives, tomatoes, 1/2 serving of feta, and fat free lemon herb dressing

It was filled with bold flavors spread throughout and left my mouth satiated and smiling!

After a long day at work, I enjoyed a massage that went back to the basics. The beautiful Katherine dug deep at my knots and the tightness that many runners deal with day in day out. Before tonight I had only frequented spa settings for massages. But, when Katherine offered a practice session which would benefit both of us I was more than game. Well, an hour later, I felt better than I’ve ever felt after leaving a massage. She used deep pressure when needed on my quads and IT band area but then balanced it with smooth massage techniques in between. Thank you Katherine for my basic but divine massage. I have realized that I don’t need the scented lotions and oils of a spa in order to feel relief!

I didn’t get home until 9:30 and therefore was absolutely Hangry Pants when I walked through the door. Bo was just finishing his run so he felt the same. This meant it was time for a quick and resourceful meal since our fridge is pretty barren. We’ve been trying to eat down our produce and perishable products since we’ll be in Maine this weekend with my parents.

Freezer to the rescue! Bo discovered some delicious chicken cacciatore in the depths of the freezer. While defrosted it I made a makeshift salad from the leftovers in our produce bin. It consisted of celery, tomatoes, carrots, and a balsamic drizzle. This, when combined with the tomato flavors from the chicken, was absolute heaven! It took us less than 10 minutes and used ingredients we already had on hand!
