A Whirlwind Friday

Happy Saturday! Here’s a sneak peak of how we spent our Saturday.

It was quite the whirlwind Friday! My parents really know how to keep me moving when they are in town, that’s for sure!

After a less than stellar 10 mile run with Katie yesterday in preparation for the Brooklyn Half Marathon next weekend, my parents and I headed out to New Jersey to see my “Jersey family” and my cousin’s adorable 10 month old, Sedona. I really don’t have baby fever in the least except for when she’s in my arms. Ask me any other day and the answer is “a good solid 3-4 years” but yesterday, you could have let me take her home and I would have been just fine!

I mean how can you not love this adorable little ball of joy. She is at such a fun age right now, telling everyone hi and making sure she’s the center of attention. Her flavor of the week is lemons. No kidding. This kid loves biting, sucking, gnawing, and entertaining herself with a lemon piece. IMG_2722

We also had some deep, serious conversations. “Sedona your mom won’t mind you coming to Geneva with me will she?”

As you can tell, she’s jealous of teeth now that her first two teeth have started making their presence known.

After going out to Jersey and back we had just 30 minutes to change clothes and walk over to Raymi for a happy hour with a few of our friends. It was SO much fun for my parents to meet our friends after hearing about them for the last 4 years. Unfortunately not everyone could make it but it was still a wonderful night filled with lots of laughs and great conversation!

Our “happy hour” was supposed to last until 7 but some how at 11pm we found ourselves finishing dinner. Once again Raymi was perfect for a crowd and each bite was delicious. I especially loved the plantain chips, ceviche sampler, the steak, and their take on seafood paella. Their happy hour special for mojitos wasn’t bad either!

An Update After Hurricane Sandy

Greetings from New York City. The city that never sleeps has been battered and beaten in ways people never imagined possible considering this was a Category 1 hurricane. I apologize that I haven’t updated earlier but this is my first access to internet, thanks to my office re-opening.

It is almost a tale of two cities at this point, especially in Manhattan. People north of 38th street barely felt anything during the storm other than the howling winds. They have power, heat, water, etc and the streets and businesses are alive as if nothing happened during the past 48 hours. However, south of 38th street is a different story. No one has had power for the past 36 hours, there was severe flooding to the avenues closest to the East River and Hudson River, strangers are helping each other, and there are people literally walking up to 39th street then standing in the sidewalks using any power plug they can find charging phones and computers.

We lost power around 9pm on Monday night and don’t expect to have it back until at least Friday or Saturday based on the latest news. Luckily, Bo’s sister who was evacuated from her home came to stay with us and the 3 of us have been warm, dry, safe and sound.  We have used 15 candles to light our home and our thankful for the gas stove which allowed us to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Our freezer stayed cold enough so that we didn’t lose any meat and I was able to bring it to the office freezer today when I came to work. I can’t say enough amazing things about our gym, Equinox, as they have allowed members to use any club in the city that is open, north of 38th street, for showers, charging phones and computers, and warmth. While the lines have been long for showers each day there is nothing like a warm shower after 36 hours without one. We have decided that we’re going to stay in our apartment even though we don’t have power as it just seems like the simplest option. We are taking advantage of our offices today to catch up on work, emails, and phone calls to loved ones who have been concerned. I’m also taking advantage of having news access so I can catch up on the New York City news and marathon updates. This is definitely not the taper week we expected but at least we’ve enjoyed 10-12 hours of sleep the past 3 nights since there isn’t much else to do.

Not bad for a dinner without power! Luckily all of this could be made using stove top heat!

For those of you who have asked, here are a few images of what our neighborhood looks like after the storm.

People were literally standing outside using the plugs normally reserved for holiday tree lights. Amazing!

Central Park in the Fall

While the rest of the city was hunkering down, trying to prepare for what Hurricane Sandy may or may not deliver over the next 48 hours, Bo and I spent our morning up in Central Park.

After a relaxing evening and 10 hours of sleep, we both woke up refreshed and ready to conquer our Sunday.  Our to do list was shorter than normal thanks to keeping up with house work during the week.

  • Buy Epsom salts for a few baths this week to relax the muscles.
  • Take a long walk to loosen out the muscles while Bo runs his 8 miles in Central Park.
  • Hit the bodega or grocery store for some last minute supplies (water, crackers, soup, tea, meat, fruit, and lots of vegetables)
  • Laundry
  • Start working on marathon playlist
  • Work on New York City marathon tips post
  • stretch
  • Post the rest of my too large Lululemon gear on eBay

Everything on this list has been done except my marathon tips post. It’s weird, every time I start typing I wish that I could just start talking to someone. When people ask me questions about the marathon in person I light up and feel as if I could go on for hours. I love helping them and putting them at ease. But, when I start to type my mind goes to the fact that I’m not necessarily a “fast” runner or anyone who will Boston Qualify anytime soon. What makes me think I’m qualified to give other people tips and suggestions about the marathon that I’ve now run two times and have yet to break 5 hours?

Thanks to an inspirational running friend, Leticia, she helped me realize that this is still an amazing accomplishment.

.01% of the population ran a marathon last year. You are among an elite group of individuals regardless of your pace.

So now that I’ve finished everything else on my to do list for today, I’m going to curl up on the couch next to Bo and Meg for the rest of the evening, sipping tea, enjoying my compression socks, and write my heart out so that my New York City Marathon experiences can help others.

Until tomorrow morning, when my post will go live, enjoy the scenes from today’s hour long walk through Central Park. I really hope that Sandy doesn’t rob marathon runners of enjoying the vibrant colors as they run the last 3 miles of the marathon through Central Park.
