Practice Makes Perfect

Eight months ago, I decided to put on my big girl pants or ahem swimsuit and join our PG swim team.

Multiple co-workers had suggested I join, noting that the team needed more females and I am evidently considered "sporty" and "athletic" within our office.
The first practice was humbling to say the least. My marathon legs did little to help me in the pool, and I quickly realized just how different the cardio and muscular demands of swimming are versus running or yoga. But, I finished and called Bo immediately after, telling him that I found a new challenge that I hoped to stick with on a weekly basis. While I haven’t made it to every Tuesday or Thursday practice since then due to either travel or lack of wanting to wake up at 5am, I have averaged once per week.

imageSome practices have left me encouraged while others leave me cursing my parents for not signing me up for Summer swim team at an early age. I have also muttered some words regarding American practices versus Europe. In French and Swiss schools swimming is included in gym class and students learn all four strokes in order to pass the test. Really? My first day of practice I was able to complete a lap of freestyle only. Butterfly, breast stroke and backstroke attempts left me sinking to the bottom or moving slower than Yertle the Turtle.

But, regardless of pace, I’m proof that practice makes perfect, though results are slow and steady versus overnight. There are many hour long swim practices that weren’t fun. 500 meters of butterfly followed by 200 of dolphin swims is the last thing my shoulders, abs and 30 year old body want to do but in between the grunts and groan, I started to see the benefits. My traps and shoulders are developed, in between wine, cheese chocolate and the European diet my legs and abs have leaned out and through taking on a new challenge I’ve found confidence. In fact, just a month after joining the swim group, I wrote this post about overcoming my fear of swimming.

imageOn Tuesday when our coach emailed us, promising a Christmas gift at practice on Thursday I was excited versus nervous. A 5000 meter swim challenge wouldn’t be easy but it was a perfect opportunity to test my ability. In fact, instead of deleting the email immediately out of fear, I emailed my swimming buddy, Laurianne, suggesting that we use the practice not to reach 5000 meters but instead to see how much of the prescribed workout we could during the hour and a half session.

Ninety minutes after diving in the pool, Laurianne and I exited smiling and feeling on top of the world. My body was sore, and while we didn’t achieve the 5,000 meter goal many of our colleagues achieved, we swam for 90 minutes and each finished 3,200 meters. This distance was not only a personal distance record for both of us but also a huge confidence builder. Now and then we all need something to remind us that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. A year ago, I never would have thought that I would gain this reminder from swimming. This has me so motivated that instead of just packing running gear for our two-week holiday in the United States, I also packed my swim gear.

Thankful for New Challenges

At the end of tonight’s yoga class, our instructor asked us to think about and reflect on the things in our life that leave us feeling thankful. Sometimes I find it hard to focus on this meditative part of class which lasts for 3 minutes after savasana but tonight I sat there in silence with a smile on my face.

I am thankful for so many things these days. But tonight I reflected upon how much has changed for me and the new fitness challenge I’m enjoying. This isn’t an official challenge I joined or something I read in a magazine. Instead it’s the challenge to overcome intimidation, try new things and make them a habit.

Today was the 5th Tuesday I’ve swam in the morning and practiced 90 minutes of yoga in the evening!

I am living proof that with practice even the hardest, scariest things get easier. There are so many things I want to conquer this year including running the Saleve with Renaud again and a marathon PR in Berlin come September. But for right now, this new found love of yoga and swimming is the perfect cross training and challenge.

Just two months ago I never imagined swimming as part of my workout regimen. For years I let intimidation get the best of me. In a similar way, I’ve always groaned at the thought of a yoga class lasting longer than an hour. Now, I find myself going to bed on Monday nights excited for what Tuesday will hold. Each week is a new challenge whether on the yoga mat or in the pool. I am still the slowest person when swimming with the kickboard and in fact get passed while doing our drills. But put me in sprint mode and I can hold my own and today I was able to swim the length of the pool with only one breath.

I thought it would be hard to convince Bo to wakeup at 5:15am on Tuesday and Thursday morning for swim practice when he isn’t working. Luckily sunrises like this and great workouts have him equally as motivated.

By the time I walk through the door at 9pm each Tuesday night I’m exhausted and starving. But the beauty of it is that I walk through the door feeling stress free and energized, regardless the type day I had at the office.

Don’t worry, neither of these sports are replacing my love of running but man am I thankful to have discovered InnerCity Yoga and our P&G swim club and have a great training partner who gets me out of bed in the mornings.

Overcoming My Fear of Swimming

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you may have noticed that there have been a few swim related posts lately.

While I grew up enjoying long, hot Savannah summer days in the pool I was never on a competive swim team. In fact, the one time I tried out for the swim team I didn’t make it as I couldn’t swim more than two laps of the pool. Luckily, I’m in better shape these days than I was back in 7th grade. When I heard about the P&G swim club which meets at a pool near our office every Tuesday and Thursday before work my initial feeling was pure intimidation. Not only did I not want to get in a bathing suit in front of co-workers but I also didn’t want them to see my lack of swimming endurance.

Luckily, Bo and a few other friends talked me into giving it a try and after 5 team workouts I’m happy to report that I haven’t drowned and I’m actually enjoying swimming. The team environment helps motivate me, the sport is humbling, it is great cross training, and I’m seeing quick improvements since I’m starting at such a low base. In addition, I try to focus on my own swimming versus comparing myself to others. Each week I choose something different to focus on whether that’s swimming longer without holding the wall, extending my stroke, or breathing.

There are no flip turns happening any time soon but I did get to learn and practice dive starts during Tuesday’s practice! This newfound love is also what helped me overcome my fear of triathlons and finally sign up for my first triathlon – the Geneva International Triathlon which takes place in Geneva on July 19th!

Our coach, Steeve Brugiere, is an accomplished triathlete and serves as a coach for multiple local triathlon clubs. He’s agreed to let me share our workouts on here so you all can benefit! If you’re in the Geneva area or looking for a remote triathlon coach, check out his website, Be Fit Personal Training!

As you can see, our workouts aren’t for the faint of heart. But, I love that every workout can be altered based on skill level and pace. For example, on this workout, I finished 1600 meters whereas other, faster swimmers completed 2000M+. If you’re just starting out, I would suggest cutting 100 meters off every section.

If you have any questions, feel free to let me know and I’ll work with Steeve to answer them!

What is your biggest athletic fear? Mine definitely has to do with my upcoming open water swim during the triathlon!
