A Skirt Without Hose!

Happy Tuesday!

New York City has finally realized that Spring has arrived! Our weather this week includes numbers like 75 and words like mostly sunny! I’m especially excited for the weekend’s sunny weather. This morning, I even had the chance to wear a skirt WITHOUT hose! I know kids, it’s the little things in life!

Today was a busy day in the office but luckily I was able to sneak out a little early for some fresh air and errands! sunnynycAs you can see, even at 7pm it was still sunny and breezy. IMG_1782

MORNING WORKOUT

My day started on an awesome foot with a personal training session. I’m amazed how far I’ve come during my month with Lauren. Each training appointment lasts an hour, including a 10 minute stretching session. While each workout includes different exercises, each one challenges me and leaves my muscles screaming and quivering. This morning our multiple lunges left my legs screaming but I realized that I no longer have a hard time finding my balance like I did a month ago. My muscles are starting to memorize movements and become more familiar with the exercises which now allows us to add more weight!

BREAKFAST

After my training session my hunger was out of control! My normal breakfast only kept me full for 3.5 hours instead of the normal 5 hours!

IMG_0798 LUNCH

I munched on a handful of almonds to subside my hunger until lunch time when my co-worker Eileen was sweet enough to bring me a salad. Her concoction was a fresh change on my normal salad including vegetables like broccoli which I rarely include on my salads. It was DELICIOUS!

DINNER

Tonight’s dinner was a delicious repeat from last week, the Cooking Light Shrimp Cobb Salad. This week the salad was a little different due to Whole Food’s lack of fresh shrimp. The salad is still a perfect and satiating evening meal but fresh shrimp makes a huge difference.

shrimpcobb I’m ready to curl up on the couch with Bo and this week’s 90 minute Glee episode! I have an early morning run planned and then my first trip out to Long Island!

Question: How do you handle your hunger when it’s off the charts? Any filling snack suggestions?

What I Learned On The Massage Table…

Tonight I had a date with Tonya, my favorite massage therapist at Equinox.  Speaking of which, never call your massage therapist a masseuse as that has sexual innuendos in the industry. photo (34)

Luckily, most Equinox spas feature a great weekday discount on their massage services: 80 minutes for the price of 50 minutes. I indulged on a hot stone massage today versus my traditional deep tissue. The description sold me immediately and I thought that the stones would make the pain of the deep tissue more relaxing and spa like.photo (35)

About this Spa Service : A breakthrough technique aimed at balancing the body’s emotional, mental, physical and spiritual energies through the application of gently heated stones as part of a deeply relaxing and penetrating massage which unlocks the body’s natural healing energies.

Meet the stars of today’s treatment: a few smooth, hot stones.  photo (33)These innocent black stones meant business. They definitely took my massage to a new level as they allowed Tonya to apply more pressure than she can with her hands alone. The warmth of the stones also warm the muscles quickly which makes them more malleable.

But, more importantly, back to the lessons I learned on this cozy table during my 80 minute session.  If you think about it, a regular massage therapist is very close to you as they touch parts of your body that few others touch or see for that matter. Therefore, her insight and comments throughout our session taught me a great deal about what I need to change over the next few weeks and months to continue training injury free.

  1. A massage therapist will know how hard you are working out since they can clearly feel the difference between muscle and flab. Knowing that someone will feel your body once a month is great incentive to work harder in the gym. Luckily, Tonya noticed my hard work today. Nothing puts me in the mood like a compliment.
  2. A massage is like yoga, in order to truly be present and enjoy the moment, you need to stop making to do lists in your head. Twenty minutes into the massage she saw my fingers moving and asked what I was doing. "Oh, I’m calculating my required splits if I want to PR in next weekend’s half." She quickly reminded me that if I exhaust my brain and body before then, I will not reach my goal. Take time to relax.
  3. Stretching for two minutes doesn’t stretch, lengthen, or relax your muscles after an hour of spin class or other physical abuse. She asked me if I stretched daily after feeling my knots and tightness. As soon as I said yes she explained that a stretching session should last at least ten minutes if I’m stretching multiple body parts. She suggested holding each stretch for 30 seconds and then holding deep stretches like hip flexors for a minute if they are especially tight.
  4. Massage therapy will in time increase my flexibility. Flexibility is requisite for an athlete or casual runner’s success during race season. Since massage therapy stretches the muscle fibers, flexibility is promoted and maintained.
  5. Ice therapy can be a wonderful at home massage technique to balance foam rolling and stretching. Using ice as part of the RICE (rest, ice, compress, and elevate) is a cheap way to keep your muscles in shape in between tough workouts which leave them tired and inflamed. Also known as cryotherapy, ice decreases the amount of swelling, muscle spasms, and pain. Don’t feel like you have to spend money on a fancy ice pack. A Ziplock bag and crushed ice is the perfect late night date when you’re muscles are screaming and you’re watching this week’s episode of the Jersey Shore.

A Hot Date with Weights

I had a hot date this morning with some new friends!IMG_0801

After a 3 mile run that went by faster than normal, I decided to back out of Whipped with Sara in favor of some time in the weight corner. I’m still not feeling 100% so a tough class didn’t sound appealing. However, I was proud of myself for spending time in the weight section instead of cutting my workout short.

Like many people, I find the weight section to be intimidating when I am not prepared with a plan of attack. There are many different types of weights, both free weights and machines, which can be confusing and dangerous if not used properly.

Since committing to cross training, weights has been part of the reason I’ve become faster. Most of my weight work has been through classes such as 30/60/90 or Corey Hill’s classes. However, this workout, which Sara shared with me, is also a perfect way to fit in weight training, especially when there isn’t a class on the gym schedule. Don’t worry, no will is looking at you while you’re lifting weights. There is no reason to be intimidated, scared, or shy of the weight section even though most females avoid it like the plague. Why should boys have all the fun anyway?

Print this post out with you so you can carry it to the gym. Also, I’ve linked each one to a website which shows how to do the exercise.

Strong, Shapely Arm Workout

Set 1:
Ez bar curl
Cabel Reverse grip single arm tricep
Hammer grip dumbell curl
Set 2:
Close grip barbell benchpress
Rope cable curls
Complete 12 reps of each exercise and complete the sets 3 times.IMG_0802

In addition to the arm work today, I spent a few minutes focusing on building my leg strength. I followed this simple workout, which I found online.

Quick Leg Workout for Weight Room Beginners

Walking lunges with 5 lb weight in each hand

Leg extensions

Incline leg press

Complete 12 reps of each, 3 times total.

This entire workout took me a total of 35 minutes, including stretching and foam rolling at the end. My muscles felt fatigued and I felt stronger overall, knowing I was focusing on an area that still needs a great deal of work and will help my running immensely.
