Keep Your Muscles Guessing with TRX Training

Those two straps, hanging innocently, have the ability to quickly remind you that there are muscles you haven’t used in ages.  As part of my partnership with the YMCA, I attended a TRX Circuit class after work at the Prospect Park YMCA. As soon as I walked through the studio door, I could tell this class was popular. Tickets were required in order to snag a spot in the packed class, meaning that it often fills to capacity. As I waited for the workout to begin, Juanita, the friend and experienced instructor warned me that I’d be sore the next day and sweaty by the end of class.

In case you aren’t familiar with TRX this acronym stands for total body resistance exercise.  Invented by a former Navy SEAL, this tool makes common exercises more difficult by forcing you to engage different body parts as you engage your core since you are often suspending your legs off the ground or leaning into the strap which changes your center of gravity. Trust me, this strap made the minute long exercises feel like five minutes of work. Similar to the megaformer at Brooklyn Body Burn, it left me trembling.

During the course of the next 55-minutes, she laughed, danced and motivated us through a workout that reminded me very much of the personal training sessions I took during 2011-2013 as it combined cardio, strength and TRX movements to keep our muscles guessing and ensure that none of the students were ever bored. After splitting the class in half, she explained that we’d rotate constantly between the front of the studio (TRX) and the back of the studio (kettlebells and mats) completing one minute of each movement.

The TRX exercises included the TRX push-up, chest press, inverted row, tricep extension, low row, frog, pike and bicep curls. In the back of the room we used the kettle bells to add an extra level of difficulty to common moves like Russian twists, squats, and lunges before focusing on more kettlebell specific moves like swings.

Once again, I was amazed at how easily Juanita made everyone in the class feel comfortable regardless their fitness level. She was constantly helping people make the moves easier or harder and reminding everyone that they should be proud that they showed up and only compare their ability against themselves, not the person next to them.

Since they offer this class multiple times per week and at multiple locations, I look forward to taking it again soon!

If your local YMCA or local gym or fitness studio offers a TRX or TRX circuit class, it is a great opportunity for you to challenge your body in a new way. If you want to learn more about TRX before going to your first class, this Greatist article outlines the five easy to follow TRX moves.

TRX Clinic at Reebok Crossfit Fifth Avenue

Tonight, after a long day at the office, I headed to Central Park on my own. Unfortunately my work run buddies had to leave an hour before I was able to tonight. This is when it really set in how much stronger I am than last year both mentally and physically. Tonight instead of heading to the gym to run on the treadmill, cutting the run short, or forgetting it all together due to my exhaustion; I changed clothes and headed out the door. I spent the next 51 minutes enjoying the peace of Central Park, the golden leaves, the dusk shadows, and camaraderie of other runners as I ran 5 miles in the park.

By the time I walked through the door tonight at 8pm, all I wanted was warm clothes and a healthy dinner. I forgot how much I love spaghetti squash. It is like the secret weapon of weeknight dinners! In less than 15 minutes, including only 2 minutes of actual work, I had a huge bowl of nutritional goodness for dinner! I mixed 1.5 cups cooked spaghetti squash with 1/3 cup homemade marinara, pre-cooked chicken, seasonings, and grated cheese together for a warm, comforting dinner.

I admit, it wasn’t the pretties dinner but it was quick, gooey, and delicious.

While I ate, I went through some pictures on my camera and came across pictures from an event 2 weeks ago that I totally forgot to share with you guys! Oops! Clearly things have been a bit crazy around these parts.

On Saturday, October 6th I had a sweaty date with a few local Fitfluential Ambassadors at Reebok CrossFit Fifth Avenue for a TRX clinic. Each week Reebok has what they call Reebok FitHub events during which time they teach a skill or a workout. The one on October 6th was a TRX Suspension Training for all levels.

It was my first time stepping in this new flagship store and I was amazed by the space overall. The upstairs is dedicated to the store where you can find all the gear to make any Crossfit session bright and colorful! I loved their women’s technical tanks and some of the bright shoes!

The downstairs however is a a whole different story. It is a HUGE Crossfit box, dedicated to sweaty WODs and strength training! This picture gives you just a glimpse of the downstairs space including rowing machines, pullup bars, ropes, and more! It was pretty amazing and I loved the bright, neon green color that splashed the black walls.

The six of us (Jill, Kristine, Katelyn, Christine and Alfonso) were able to enjoy a 45 minute session which included a quick overview of TRX and then a quick workout incorporating all the different key body parts. While most of weren’t new to TRX it was still a great opportunity to learn a few new moves, improve technique, and sweat together!

My personal trainer, Lauren, first introduced me to TRX over a year ago and since then we use it almost every week during our sessions. It requires you to engage multiple muscles at one time which pushes your body more than if you were just using free weights or a machine. The best thing about the TRX is that you can take it anywhere and use it at home or a gym. Some gyms in NYC, such as Crunch, even have TRX classes as part of their group fitness schedule!

Below are just a few of the different moves we did during the session.

Personal Training Check-In: TRX

Happy Wednesday! This morning I woke up bright and early for my 11th personal training session.

During the course of these 10 personal training sessions I’ve mastered the routine. We start with five minutes of dynamic warm-up and stretching including butt kicks, lunges, deep squats, and high kicks. We complete 3 circuits, each including 3 exercises, 3 times before I get to enjoy the stretch session. Each session, there are at least 2 exercises which feel easier than the rest. Sometimes it’s a plank or a squat, but it’s never the lunges! Then, the rest of the exercises leave me sweating, shaking, or quivering depending on the day.

But, Lauren didn’t like how comfortable I had become with our sessions or the workouts. This morning, bright and early, Lauren decided it was time to switch things up.

Enter, the TRX training system. This simple yellow and black device is the devil in disguise.

It takes simple exercises and makes them so challenging that you’re quickly humbled and begging for mercy. I’ve watched people use the tool at Equinox with trainers and always thought it looked fun and not too bad. I’ve even read about Ali’s experience with the class at Crunch Fitness in NYC.

Today’s workout was more challenging than I ever imagined. In fact, after the first circuit I was sweating so much that I slid on the mat.

3x10ea 1 Leg Squat
3×10 Inverted Row
3x10ea Oblique Crunch on Hands

3x10ea Lateral Split Squat
3×10 Roll Out
3x30s ea Side Plank

3×10 Hamstring Curl
3×10 Atomic Push Up
3x45s Reverse Plank

The suspension training, or leveraged bodyweight exercise, uses your body weight to complete each exercise but changes your center of balance, therefore making the average exercise far harder. Completing 10 pushups was almost impossible with my legs elevated in the TRX straps! In addition, this lightweight tool can be carried anywhere since it’s only 2 pounds AND you can adjust the difficulty of exercises just by changing your body angle or position.

I highly recommend giving a TRX class a try or ask you gym if they have one you can use!
