My Final Weekend in Geneva

Happy Sunday! It was another sun-filled weekend in Geneva!  I hope you had a chance to relax this weekend. Due to my house-hunting trip in New York City and the Nike Women’s 10km race in London, this was my final weekend in Geneva. The sunshine and warm weather allowed me to enjoy it just the way I wanted –  by the lake.

Many of my friends have asked why I didn’t travel somewhere this weekend while I have Europe at my fingertips.  Honestly, at this point, there was no where I wanted to be more this weekend than relaxing in Geneva. While many of my friends were out of town for weddings, bachelorette parties and other travel a few lovely friends were here to relax and soak up the sunshine. Once back in New York City, relaxing on the water and enjoying views like this won’t be nearly as convenient as they are now. Keeping that in mind, I slathered on the sunscreen and headed outside for the entire weekend.

Friday night I enjoyed a lakeside barbecue with Leah and Jason who stopped in Geneva on Friday night as part of their honeymoon which is taking them across the world for six months!

We sipped wine, relaxed and enjoyed grilled sausages and salads while catching up. I loved hearing about their adventures thus far, especially their time in Slovenia, their favorite country thus far.

We were treated to an incredible sunset before the sky opened and forced us to run home in the pouring rain.

Saturday morning I happily obliged Leah’s request for a leisurely 5k run through Geneva before they left.  We ran along the lake, stopping a few times for some intervals including tricep dips and bench dips.

After sending them on their way, I met Sandra and Louise at the Wakeboard Center for an afternoon of sunshine and reading on the rocks. IMG_0593

A great area for an afternoon on the lake, the Wakeboard Center has a great mix of options including 2 bars, restaurant, stand up paddle boarding, wakeboarding, in addition to space for relaxing on the beach, floating dock and rocks. We preferred it over Genève Plage as it had far less kids and entrance is free.

Perched on the rocks we spent hours soaking up the sun while enjoying a bit of a breeze. Temperatures in Geneva reached 90 yesterday, so after a few hours Sandra and I decided to take to the water. Sandra and I spent an hour exploring the lake via stand up paddleboard. We spent half the time paddling and half the time using the board as a base for swimming in the water and relaxing. We both found it more challenging than expected due to the boat wakes but definitely enjoyed it! Though I can’t imagine surviving a stand-up paddle boarding yoga class, I’d love to try it next time I’m in Savannah or another waterfront location.

After so much sun, fresh air and a beer it was difficult to rally but after a round of showers and some much needed aloe we continued the fun with dinner and drinks

IMG_0633

Our evening progressed into dinner a wine and cheese filled dinner Le Decanteur, gelato at Manu and a nightcap at Bottle Brothers.  Yesterday was SUCH a relaxing day – exactly what I wanted.

After sleeping off yesterday’s fun in the sun, I woke up ready to continue the weekend’s relaxing theme while still enjoying some sunshine and getting my life in order. Since I fly to New York on Wednesday, laundry was first on the agenda and starting to pack and organize things was second.

My morning coffee and the New York Times fueled a sweaty run and farmer’s market shopping session in preparation for this evening’s dinner date with Emily. I knew I wanted something healthy, fresh and easy. It’s way too hot in this apartment for the oven and I had too many other things on my list to be burdened with a complicated recipe. Pinterest came through again by recommending this Best of Summer Salad with Blueberry-Balsamic Vinaigrette.

This picture doesn’t due it justice!  Suffice it to say, Emily and I both agreed that this giant salad, inspired by the above recipe, needs to become a Summer standby. Healthy and fresh, the salad was delicious and the avocado, Chevre and almonds helped ensure we were satiated. I can’t wait to take the leftovers to the office tomorrow!

How was your weekend? What is your favorite Summer salad combination?

36 Hours in Geneva, Switzerland

If you’re in Geneva, Switzerland during the months of July through September, you’re in luck. Residents in Geneva live for two seasons – winter and summer. Winters revolve around skiing in the mountains just an hour or two away while summer revolves around the lake, Lac Leman. The iconic fountain, known locally as the Jet d’Eau, is over 450 feet tall, and serves as a perfect landmark for all your explorations.

Last week I had the opportunity to share Geneva with Anne, who stopped briefly in Geneva between visits in Paris and Lucerne. I was more than happy to share my perfect Summer itinerary with her. This itinerary can work for anyone visiting Geneva during the warmer months, whether you’re here for a few hours or a few days.

See: The Summer months tend to be quite temperate, rarely getting hotter than 85 degrees though the evening temperatures frequently drop to the low 60s. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes as much of Geneva is meant to be explored by foot.

36 Hours in Geneva

Explore the city and surrounding areas on two wheels compliments of Geneve Roule. May through October this company offers free 4-hour bike rentals at eight different locations around Geneva. You merely walk into the shop, request a free bike, provide them with 20CHF deposit and an identification card. Four hours later, when you return your bike, they give you your money and ID card back. Dedicated bike lanes, sidewalks, lake paths and gardens make Geneva a very bike friendly city! Make sure you see the flower clock in Jardin Anglais, ride past the Jet d’Eau, around to the other side of the lake where you can explore the botanical gardens.

Explore Old Geneva via foot as you wind through the cobblestone streets, admire the 15th- century architecture and dust up on your Reformation history while touring Cathedrale Saint-Pierre, dating back to the 12th century. Visitors can climb to the top of the clock tower to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains, lake and city on clear days.

Treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon in the sunshine and take a dip in the lake at one of Geneva’s lake beaches.  Families, couples and solo travelers alike can enjoy a relaxing afternoon at either Wake Board Center or Geneve Plage. Families and locals alike tend to love Genève Plage because it offers a water slide, Olympic size pool, baby pool, five diving boards, and two floating platforms. The Wakeboard Center tends to draw a more adult crowd due to the two bars, restaurant and both paddle board and wake board rentals.

Drink: While Geneva is a quieter town than London or New York, there are ample bars and clubs if that is what you want. There seems to be something for everyone, especially in the Summer. Below are three different bars where we often find ourselves enjoying a glass of wine or Summer evening with friends.

L’Atelier Cocktail ClubAn extensive cocktail menu, friendly staff, plenty of indoor and outdoor space along with a great happy hour special (5-7pm) makes this a popular spot.

Soleil Rouge– A Spanish inspired wine and tapas bar which features a rotating menu of 20 different wines available by the glass. This tends to be a crowded and popular spot so show up early if you want a coveted outdoor table.

Les Voiles – This lake front club is a mix of a Miami beach club and European dance club. The music is European house music, and though the drinks are more expensive , the lake front views, especially at sunset, make it worth the money. There are multiple dance floor areas along with some lounge areas for those who would rather relax and chat.

Eat: While Geneva may not have the most-extensive restaurant scene and Mexican has proven impossible to find, there are a handful of restaurants that are quickly becoming our local favorites.  Due to the multitude of nationalities in the city you can find just about any cuisine you want, especially French, Italian, Turkish, Lebanese, & Swiss. The below are just two of our favorites that we’ve shared with visitors since arriving.

Cottage CaféThe perfect spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner, this small café is situated in a small park, just steps from the lake. Serving food Tuesday through Saturday from 7am until 9pm, the menu includes small plates that are inspired by seasonal ingredients. My favorites are their zucchini stuffed with lamb, figs and goat cheese, grilled octopus, and tabouleh.

Le CriseA hidden gem in Eaux-Vives, there is no menu, but instead a waiter or the owner who comes to your table to greet you and present you, orally, with the evenings 5 or 6 appetizers followed by the 4 or 5 main courses. The atmosphere is funky and eclectic, but the music is always fun and the food is incredible. Our favorite dishes are the escargot, duck confit and the lamb. Come for the food but stay for the party that begins around 10pm each night when the music gets turned up, and the dancing begins.

Fete de Geneve: For 25 days each Summer the lake front becomes home to a music festival and fair, attracting tourists of all ages. Evening fireworks, fair rides, food, drinks, and multiple music stages take over the lake front area from July 17th until August 10th. If you happen to be in Geneva during that time period spend an evening enjoying the scene!

Happy First Day of Summer

I hope you all enjoyed the Summer Solstice, also known as the 1st day of Summer or the longest day of the year!

We started the day with a sweat. Around 9, Bo and I each headed out for our respective long workouts. Even though we didn’t work out together it makes waking up on a Saturday that much easier when there is someone to provide extra motivation. Bo headed out for a 50k bike ride while I headed to the lake for a long run.

After focusing on speed lately, transitioning to long run mentality has been difficult these past few weeks. I spent more time checking my Garmin yesterday than normal but it paid off as I kept perfect splits for 11 miles. My goal pace was between 9:50-9:55 and I kept an average pace of 9:51! My goal for the Berlin Marathon is a sub 4:30. If I can maintain this same pace as I increase my mileage than hopefully that goal can evolve into a sub 4:20.

After quick showers we met up with a few of our friends for an afternoon of sunshine at the Wakeboard Center.  A great area for an afternoon on the lake the Wakeboard Center has a great mix of options including 2 bars, restaurant, stand up paddle boarding, wakeboarding, in addition to space for relaxing on the beach, floating dock and rocks. We ended up hanging out the beach for seven hours mixing up sun and relaxation time with two swims and a wakeboard session. While I didn’t wakeboard the wives hopped on the boat to balance out the boat and watch our husband’s wakeboard on the lake. It was so much fun and definitely makes me want to go sometime this summer even though I’ve never wake boarded before!

After so much sun, fresh air and a few glasses of wine it was difficult to rally but after another round of showers and some much needed aloe we continued the fun with dinner and drinks in between taking in the Fete de la Musique, an annual music festival in Geneva. Unfortunately the only picture we took all night is a blurry one.
