A Hot 10 Miles through the City

So far this weekend has been perfect!

Last night, Melissa and I enjoyed a relaxing dinner together over delicious food while catching up on life and summer travels. I can’t believe it’d been almost a month since we saw each other!

Posto, which happens to be one of our favorite delivery places, is even better in person.

We shared a the delicious arugula and bocconcini salad to start which included a light lemon vinaigrette dressing and chunks of mozzarella. Holy yum!

IMG_3265 (640x478)It was packed last night since no one opted to eat outside on their patio. I really wish the families had taken their crying children out their. IMG_3267 (640x478)I enjoyed four pieces of the personal Shroomtown pizza which is my all time favorite Posto pizza. If you’re a mushroom lover and you live in New York you have to enjoy this pizza! It comes topped with marinara sauce, cheese, Portobello, shitake, and button mushrooms!

IMG_3269 (640x478) By 9:30 I was in bed and resting my brain and legs with this week’s US Weekly. As I fell asleep, I also put together a new long run plan which switched things up a little bit.

Instead of sleeping until 6am, I was up at 5:30 in preparation for my long run.

For the first time ever, I filled out the important medical information section on the back of my bib. Based on the heat I thought the chance of collapsing mid run was higher than normal.

IMG_3275 (640x478) My pre-run breakfast was my normal slice of bread, almond butter, and banana sprinkled with a dash of salt. I also sipped on some G2 before heading out the door.

It as game time and regardless of the heat or humidity, I was ready to kick this run’s ass even if it was already 83 degrees with 69% humidity!

IMG_3273 (427x640)

IMG_3276 (480x640) I decided to run straight to the NYRR Long Run start at 102nd street. The first four miles were slow and I focused on breathing and enjoying the morning sights rather than focus on the heat. Yesterday, when I asked Ali for suggestions she said not to think about the heat and she was right!

IMG_3277 (478x640) IMG_3279 (640x478)

I reached the park five minutes before the start and was amazed how many people showed up for the run considering the running conditions.

IMG_3280 (640x478) IMG_3281 (640x478)IMG_3283 (640x478) IMG_3286 (612x612) I lined up with the 10 minute pace group and planned to enjoy 6 slow and steady miles with them. The pacers kept telling us that they were going to keep more like a 10:30 pace due to the heat. I was fine with this but really questioned this as I experienced a similar story last year when I did a pace group training run before the marathon.

IMG_3287 (478x640) Regardless, my legs felt good having already racked a sweaty four miles and I was excited to conquer Harlem Hills in the first mile.

I stayed with the group for two miles, even though they were in no way keeping a 10:30 pace. Before my Garmin went into chirp overload and spazzed on me, it showed a 9:40 pace and others in the group were talking about the quick pace. I decided to slow my pace and hang out with my music for the next mile. Then, I heard someone calling my name from behind and finally met Meghan, one of my Twitter buddies who was rocking the long run. We chatted for a few minutes before I split off from the group and headed towards Columbus Circle.

Last night, I realized that if I ran the 4 miles to the park and then did 3 miles in the park, which would be a great hill workout, I could exit the park around Columbus Circle and run the final 3 towards Equinox for a foam rolling session.

IMG_3291 (640x480) I was hot, sweaty, and a little tired when I exited but more than anything ready to be done. My first mile out of the park was pretty slow, close to a 12 minute mile, as I was trying to lower my heart rate which was pretty high at this point.

But, the next two miles were flat and fast. My legs were heading home and they were ready!

IMG_3294 (640x478) IMG_3295 (640x478) I quickly made my way down Broadway past Times Square and Macy’s Herald Square (notice the Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue ad on the jumbotron?) in a little more than 20 minutes!

By the time I reached Equinox I was drenched and happy to be done but felt great overall!

IMG_3292 (478x640)Once I mapped my course, I discovered that I actually only did 9.76 miles, but I can’t complain! I finished in 1 hour and 39 minutes which is around a 10:10 pace; a huge improvement from last year!

Thirty minutes later I was clean, cool, and happy!

IMG_3297 (478x640) IMG_3298 (478x640) IMG_3299 (640x478) IMG_3300 (480x640)There is no better way to end a long run morning than sipping a banana, almond butter,  and Sun Warrior chocolate smoothie!

Have a great Saturday and congrats to everyone who completed long runs, triathlons, and awesome workouts this morning!

NYRR Run for Central Park: Negative Splits

My Type of Sunday

Last week, I logged 17 miles of running, one spin class, 30 minutes of yoga, and two personal training sessions. I stuck to my training plan perfectly which is a great start. It seems weird to be proud of running 17 miles in one week when that was the equivalent of one long run just a nine months ago. But, building mileage isn’t easy when you’re so accustomed to shorter runs.

This week’s plan is very similar to last week except the mileage of my Monday and Saturday runs are increased.

Monday: Basic run 5 miles with 4 striders

Tuesday: Personal training in the AM + yoga PM

Wednesday: 3 miles + spin class

Thursday: Personal Training

Friday: Rest Day

Saturday: NYCM Long Training Run #1 at least 9 miles (I’m going to see how I feel at 9 and possibly push myself to do 10 or 11. My goal is to maintain around a 10 minute per mile pace.)

Sunday: 3 mile recovery run

I’m excited to finally hit the 20 mile mark next week!

Hope you have a great week and are able to stick with your own personal workout or training goals.

NYRR Run for Central Park 4 Miler: Negative Splits!

Happy Saturday!

Even though this morning’s agenda included the NYRR Run for Central Park 4 mile race and my second long run of marathon training, I was still able to enjoy a double date last night and even get in some salt and carb loading.

IMG_3112 (480x640) We saw the 9:30pm showing of Harry Potter 7 Part 2 in 3-D at the Lincoln Center I-Max theatre with our Hogwart fanatic friends Mike & Liz. Luckily they knew a few things we didn’t:

  • Seeing HP7 in New York City opening weekend means you HAVE to be in line at least 2 hours in advance if you want to get seats together.
  • A few handfuls of movie theatre popcorn is the perfect way to load up on carbohydrates since it also includes a nice dose of salt.
  • Looking like fools in 3-D glasses after a long work week is the perfect way to feel like a kid again and forget any stress you left at the office. IMG_0761 (640x478)

I was a little nervous about my 6:30am wake-up call after going to bed past midnight, but surprisingly I was bounding out of bed five minutes before my alarm clock. Maybe it was the new Lululemon outfit I had waiting for today’s run or the fact that I had heard rumor that it was going to be cooler outside this morning than last week.

My morning started out just like any other Saturday of marathon training. I enjoyed my peanut butter and banana half sandwich and a Nuun cocktail before heading out with my CamelBak strapped to my back. IMG_3119 (478x640) IMG_3122 (478x640) IMG_3123 (640x480) This week. per my running coach’s recommendation, I did a true warm-up before arriving at Central Park. I walked from our house to 44th street before jogging a mile up to 68th and Park where I met Jes.

IMG_3126 (478x640)Last night, Jes jumped at the opportunity to use Bo’s bib for today’s race since Bo can’t run for two weeks while his thumb’s nerves heal. I was equally as excited to introduce her to the world of Saturday morning NYRR races since today was her first. We giddily chatted as we walked towards the start. She was amazed by all the people and the organization; not realizing that anything like this existed in the city.

IMG_3124 (640x478) IMG_3127 (640x478) Since we had both warmed our legs up with a mile jog before the race, we spent the remaining time doing some dynamic stretches. Since we both had different plans for today’s race, we decided to line up in the same corral but then run solo once the race started. Jes’ plan was to treat this as a true diagnostic race since it is her first race and she doesn’t run with a watch on a daily basis. My goal was two fold:

  • Run negative splits throughout the four miles
  • Finish the race feeling as if I’d pushed myself but could still run another 3 miles

Not every race is meant to set a new personal record and I’m finally okay with that. In fact, I think I was even more excited about today’s race because it was a new challenge. At 8am, on the dot, the race started and we were quickly moving towards the start line. I had a great feeling about today’s race. The weather was gorgeous, the crowd’s energy was high, and I felt very prepared after a great warm-up and stretching session.

The four miles passed very quickly as I focused on the gorgeous weather, my breathing, and starting out slow.

Four miles later I didn’t PR but I sure as heck registered negative splits! Success!

Mile 1 9:51

Mile 2 9:34

Mile 3 9:18

Mile 4 9:08

Today’s 38:07 is a 7 minute improvement from the last time I ran this race back in 2009!

image IMG_3128 (640x480)I was super sweaty but felt great and immediately started running back downtown. My goal for the remaining 3 miles was to keep my pace below a 10 minute mile while also enjoying the sights and sounds of the Upper East Side, Midtown, Murray Hill, and finally Gramercy.

IMG_3131 (640x478) IMG_3133 (640x478) IMG_3134 (640x478) IMG_3135 (478x640) IMG_3136 (640x478) IMG_3138 (478x640) IMG_3141 (640x478) IMG_3143 (640x478) IMG_3145 (640x478) Success!

Mile 5 8:56

Mile 6 8:36

Mile 7 9:42

Mile 8 8:07

After an hour and a half of sweating, I was only craving one thing, thanks to Theodora’s influence.

IMG_3140 (478x640) I’m hooked on Zico now. It was refreshing, cool, and the perfect post run treat. In addition, the small amount of sugar helped keep me stable until our lunch at Guy and Gallard Cafe an hour and a half later.

IMG_3146 (640x478) IMG_3147 (640x478)It has been an amazing Saturday!

  • A wonderful long run, that shows great improvements versus last year’s pace.
  • A delicious lunch date with my hubby.
  • Plenty of time outside running errands and enjoying our city’s gorgeous parks, sights, and sounds. IMG_3149 (640x478) IMG_3150 (640x478) IMG_3152 (640x478) IMG_3158 (478x640) Like I said, New York City has some amazing sights and sounds.

Have a great weekend!
