A Lazy Sunday

After celebrating my friend Lauren’s last weekend in New York City and her upcoming wedding, I was craving a relaxing day.

I slept, without stirring, until 8:45 at which time I woke up, realized Bo had already left for the office, and went back to sleep. I didn’t wake up until 10, when I caught Bo snapping this picture.

IMG_1869 (640x478)Time with cold sheets and soft pillows was exactly what my mind and body wanted.

When I did finally rise, I felt refreshed and rested. These past few weeks have been busy ones and the trend isn’t going to end anytime soon. While I know it isn’t possible to “catch” up on sleep during the weekends it still feels good to get a few extra hours of rest.

Our first task this morning was breakfast as we were both starving! I’ve mentioned on multiple occasions that egg sandwiches are my favorite weekend breakfast; and today was no exception.

IMG_1864 (640x478) IMG_1866 (640x478)  This morning’s egg sandwich included the following:

  • Two pieces of toasted Pepperidge Farm Light Bread
  • One Eggland’s Best egg over medium
  • One slice of turkey bacon broken in half
  • salt & pepper

I also enjoyed a sliced banana and cup of tea on the side.

After a quick run and workout, we enjoyed the weather by strolling through Union Square hand in hand. Being in no rush allowed us to literally walk by each vendor, enjoy the breeze, and catch up. As always, there were some interesting sites.

We were in and out within thirty minutes and ready for a late lunch and The King’s Speech. I threw together leftovers along with a delicious, fresh hunk of Whole Foods whole wheat bread.

IMG_1882 (478x640) Leftover pork tenderloin, corn, and romaine never tasted so delicious! I think it was the barbecue sauce and mustard drizzle that completed this salad.

We’re spending the rest of the evening getting organized for the week as it’s going to be a busy one. Here’s my week and workouts at a glance:

Personal Training Check- In: A Month Later

As you all may recall, a month ago I took the plunge and started a relationship with a personal trainer. The decision to begin was a tough one. It’s like starting a relationship with a bad boy or a new dessert. It’s something you know you shouldn’t do, but you just can’t resist. You know it’s going to be addicting, it’s expensive, and it requires dedication.

Luckily for me, a trainer comes with far better benefits than a new dessert obsession or bad boy.

A month ago, March 30th, Lauren and I met for the first time at the Equinox on 19th and Broadwa. Our first session was a bit awkward, as I was nervous and worried about what the future held. Would I bulk up like Hulk Hogan? Would my body be so exhausted after our sessions that I wouldn’t be able to run? Would she make me cry or push me too hard? Would she be worth the money? What if I embarrassed myself and couldn’t finish a set or an exercise, or looked like a fool completing an exercise. (See example below.)

Luckily, looking back on this first month, I have nothing negative to say. Sure, it’s an expensive addiction, but in my experience, it has been well worth it. I’ve increased my strength, decreased my body fat, and lost weight in the process. In fact, I feel more confident today, than I did the day I finished the NYC Marathon. I think the reason for this is because I feel like the circle is complete. I could run a marathon, with proper training, even better than before since I’m including strength training. In fact, earlier this week, I shared this thought with my Twitter  followers:

Today, during our session, Lauren and I talked about some of the many benefits I’ve enjoyed over the past month. In addition, I took that one step further by making a list which captures these benefits for readers who may be apprehensive or wary.

  • A trainer pushes me to attempt exercises I wouldn’t try alone.
  • A trainer prevents injury by insuring my form is correct.
  • A trainer can push me to lift that last rep when I thought I was done.
  • A trainer can point out results that are naked to the common eye such as improved balance, form, or strength.
  • A trainer can become a friend and therapist, with whom you can vent, laugh, and bitch.
  • A trainer ensures you don’t get bored with the relationship by trying something new every time.

Since many people have asked, I wanted to also share a few examples of our workouts. Right now, we are meeting twice a week, for an hour each time. Each session includes 5 minutes of dynamic warm-up, 45 minutes of working out, and 10 minutes of stretching. The stretching has been a very important component, helping ensure that I recover faster and prevent injuries.

Say It, Do It: FCITC Style

Happy Monday!

In case you’re catching up from the holiday weekend, it was a busy one in our world. We went out Friday and Saturday night with friends, which included dinner at two amazing restaurants Beauty & Essex and Zengo. The reviews of both will be up later this week but needless to say they were delicious!

In addition, the weekend’s post highlight the most exciting parts including Easter and a new PR!

During the past month, I’ve kept up with Jes and other people’s workouts via her great feature, Say It, Do It. This Sunday feature helps readers start the week off on the right foot and stay accountable. This week, I decided to join in the fun in hopes of keeping myself of the right track during a very busy week. I want to make sure my workouts continue to challenge me so I can enjoy more great race PRs like the one I had this Saturday!IMG_1728 (480x640)

Below are the workouts I shared in the comments section of her post today.

Monday- AM Equinox Spin + abs/arms
Tuesday- AM personal training appointment+3 mile run
Wednesday- AM Equinox Spin+ abs
Thursday- 5-6 mile run
Friday- AM personal training appointment
Saturday- yoga+ 4 mile run
Sunday- rest day

In addition, I’m also including a food challenge. Now that Lent is over, sweets are allowed to come back into my life. This is scary because I think cutting out sweets was a catalyst in my weight loss these past six weeks. I don’t want to gain any of that weight back or return to my previous ways. Therefore, my goal is to limit sweets to the weekend as much as possible. That means no packaged sweets, office candies, or leftover cookies.

What are your goals for the week?
